IT’S REALLY NOT! 🙅🏼‍♀️🙅🏼‍♀️🙅🏼‍♀️

Hanging out in the CKD support forums this week one question that keeps coming up time and time again:
‘ what foods should I avoid for my CKD?’

Well meaning people then respond with a long list of foods they think you shouldn’t eat for CKD.
The thing is - there is really only one food that should be avoided universally for CKD and that is Star Fruit (but that’s another story).

All other restrictions depend on
- The stage and cause of your CKD
- Your CKD treatment plan
- Your blood results
- Your medications
- Your usual dietary patterns
- And the list goes on………

It’s also a pretty negative mindset. As a renal dietitian, I instead focus on what foods you CAN include.
And it’s often not about having to completely cut out your favourite foods altogether. Instead it’s about knowing how much and how often you can enjoy those things that really bring joy to your diet.

Let’s face it - There is SO much more to eating than just providing energy and nutrients.

YES!!
I for one think that life without pizza would be very miserable. ☹️

There’s no doubt that pizza can be high in salt, potassium and phosphate but get the toppings and serve size right and it can be suitable option for CKD.

My top tips for building a kidney friendly pizza:
🍕Skip the processed meats

🍕Skip other salty toppings like olives, anchovies, feta, added sauces

🍕Choose vegetarian, chicken breast or seafood toppings instead

🍕Load up+++ on extra vegetable toppings

🍕Limit your serving to 2-3 slices and serve with a beautiful salad on the side

And for an added bonus - make your own at home and go for a reduced fat mozzarella and wholegrain or high fibre base. 🙌🏻

You CAN eat your favourite foods on a kidney diet. It’s usually about balance and knowing how much and how often that particular food can fit in to your overall dietary pattern.

Today we celebrate Dietitian’s Day 2023. 🥳

Personally I’d like to acknowledge all of the amazing Dietitians I’ve been lucky enough to learn from, work with and be inspired by across the 18 years of my career.

Tireless, often under-appreciated and committed to bettering the lives of others through food and nutrition - I’ve certainly shared my journey with some amazing clinicians.

As I reflect on where to from here, my attention turns to the future dietitian I want to become.
One that meaningfully improves the nutrition knowledge and outcomes of people living with Chronic Kidney Disease and the awareness of this life altering disease in the community.

Kidney Nutrition Co will be committed to empowering those with CKD to use nutrition and lifestyle change to take control of their disease by cutting through the kidney diet confusion one myth or misconception at a time 👊🏻

But aren’t Lentils high potassium? 🤷‍♀️

This is one of my favourite plant based protein recipes - Red Lentil Dahl……I rephrase - The BEST Red Lentil Dahl!

Packed full of kidney protective veggies, fibre and plant protein, not only is this dish good for you, it’s also budget friendly and delicious.

Did you know that swapping some animal protein for plant protein can be one of the key strategies for slowing the progression of your kidney disease?

Plant based meals don’t need to be bland or boring. The key is make them taste good and this recipe does just that.

Yes lentils do contain potassium but at a comparable amount to meat, chicken or fish AND the potassium in lentils is less well absorbed. And remember - not every person with CKD needs to restrict potassium.

OATS
The perfect option for an affordable, versatile and kidney friendly breakkie

💜 Low in salt
💜 Low in potassium
💜 Full of fibre and beta glucan which is amazing for keeping cholesterol in check
💜Full of whole grain goodness

For people with CKD, including a source of whole grains at every meal can actually reduce your absorption of dietary potassium and assist the body to clear waste products that the kidneys are no longer able to do so well.

An oat breakfast can also be a great option if you are trying to limit your protein intake - especially if you make with a plant based milk alternative like almond or oat (always calcium fortified please!)

This is one of my favourite ways to use oats at breakfast and with the weather warming up here in Australia I thought I’d share it with you! ☀️

IT’S TRUE- there is no one kidney disease diet.

This is why googling ‘diet for kidney disease’ can lead you down a very confusing path with everything you read having conflicting information. 🤯

Each person with kidney disease is unique and their dietary needs depend on their own unique set of circumstances.

It means that it’s important not to change your diet based on advice from google or another well meaning person with kidney disease. Chances are that their circumstances and dietary needs are VERY different to yours.

Following diet advice that isn’t tailored to you can:
🙅🏼‍♀️ lead to unnecessary restriction
🙅🏼‍♀️ cause nutritional deficiencies
🙅🏼‍♀️place you at risk of other health conditions
🙅🏼‍♀️ worsen your kidney function
🤷‍♀️ make you very confused and miserable

Eeeeek! Lucky I’m here to help! 🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏼‍♀️

I’m all about nutritious lunch options that are fast and fuss free.
This buddha bowl took 5 mins to throw together for lunch today and it’s the perfect way to get in those kidney protective veggies and plant proteins.

Here I’ve used tinned edamame beans and a snack sized tin of chickpeas that come dressed in olive oil, garlic and rosemary. So delicious with a bit of hummus on the side 😉.

Did you know that replacing animal protein with plant protein can be a key strategy for slowing your loss of kidney function?

This Broccoli soup recipe is a cracker.
Nutritious, delicious (promise) and most importantly my kids devour it and ask for more. 🙌🏻

It’s such a great way to up your kidney protective veggie serves and it’s VERY budget friendly which has never been more important.

Soup can be tricky if you have kidney disease.
I suggest:
- using salt reduced stock
- keep salty ingredients to small quantities (here I have chosen to add the bacon as a garnish rather than adding the full amount to the soup so I can control the serving size)
- If you have a fluid restriction or high potassium then keep your serve size to a mug full and serve with a toasted sandwich on the side

Hit me up if you’d like the recipe 🥦
