Flying with a cast? Here’s what you need to know:
Before clearing someone to fly, our fracture clinic doctors consider several factors — including the type and location of the fracture, how recently the cast was applied, the risk of swelling or circulation issues during flight, your ability to sit comfortably and safely, and any airline medical requirements.
If your cast is a week old or more, it usually doesn’t need to be split, as swelling is much lower after the first few days.
Your doctor will also check:
Comfort and circulation
Flight length and seating needs
Any other health risks (like clotting)
