Wound healing is never linear.
And in high-risk clients, every decision matters.
This client was referred to me for a second opinion as their wound continued to deteriorate.
The client was high risk, with significant comorbidities and a history of necrotising fascitis, which had already resulted in the client having the right leg amputated above the knee.
That meant this wound, on their remaining leg was critical.
Healing wasn't just about closing skin. It was about preserving independence, mobility, and quality of life.
Elderly clients with chronic conditions present ongoing challenges. Just when you think a wound is on the right trajectory, it can change dramatically from one visit to the next.
Wound care is more than dressings.
It's: • Understanding wound aetiology
• Recognising subtle changes early
• Selecting the right products (from thousands available)
• Adjusting treatment plans. • Collaborating with the multidisciplinary team.
• And planning for long-term skin integrity, not just closure
This wound took 2 months to heal.
But the real success is preventing breakdown.
We've continued regular review visits, monitoring skin integrity and intervening early at the first sign of change.
It's now been 5 months and the wound remains fully healed.
A very happy client.
A relieved family.
And a reminder of why we do what we
