In a stressful emergency situation, most people's instinct is to soak up all the blood. That's not how bleeding control works.

Pressure is what stops uncontrolled bleeding. Here's what that looks like in practice:
1️⃣ Locate the bleeding source — expose, assess, prioritise
2️⃣ Apply direct pressure — firm, constant, don't let go
3️⃣ Arterial bleed on a limb — get a tourniquet on 5-10cm above the wound and not over a joint
4️⃣ Deep or junctional wound — pack it with gauze or haemostatic gauze
5️⃣ Call for help — dial 000
6️⃣ Keep your patient calm and warm

What's something else that you wish more people knew about bleeding control? Drop it in the comments. 👇

Most trauma training assumes you have room to work. Room to kneel, move around your patient, lay out your gear. Real emergencies don't always give you that.

Vehicle extrications, mining accidents, collapsed structures — the scenarios where your patient is most critically injured are often the same ones where you're wedged in, working at an angle, with one hand free if you're lucky.

Your kit needs to account for that.
