Recovery Camp

Recovery Camp Established in 2013, Recovery Camp is an innovative, evidence-based and award-winning program with impact. Recovery Camp is such an alternative.

Mental Health Recovery Through Therapeutic Recreation | Lived Experience Education | Registered NDIS Provider

Recovery Camp offers a transformative, evidence-based program making a significant impact on mental health and mental health education Recovery Camp is:
• a professional experience placement for university students enrolled in health-based disciplines, contributing to workforce developme

nt and continuing professional enhancement.
• a recovery-focused experience for people living with a mental illness.
• an opportunity for carer respite. Many health professional programmes in Australia require students to attend professional experience placements. There is a need for more experiences that go beyond traditional clinical placement programs, are cost-effective and meet curriculum requirements. Recovery Camp brings together people with a lived experience of mental illness, health students and professionals to participate in an Australian innovation. Attendees engage in a structured facilitated program underpinned by the principles of therapeutic recreation. Empirical research undertaken at Recovery Camp indicates that outdoor recreation activities are the catalyst to improve significant outcomes. For consumers, participation at Recovery Camp:
• builds resilience,
• increases confidence and self-determination, and
• contributes to mental health recovery. For health students, attendance at Recovery Camp:
• increases clinical confidence and competence, and
• reduces stigma towards people with mental illness. Recovery Camps were established in 2013 and are available to organisations seeking innovative, evidence-based professional experience placement opportunities for their health students, and organisations who are interested in providing a recovery-focused, strengths-based experience for those with a lived experience of mental illness. Last week marked Recovery Camp’s 56th program! 😀

Held at Borambola Sport and Recreation NSW, from April 13–17, we welcomed nursing students from the University of Wollongong and Charles Sturt University for a five-day immersive mental health clinical placement, alongside our incredible lived experience experts. Together, they engaged in a dual-impact therapeutic recreation program focused on personal recovery, connection and real-world learning.

Set in the peaceful surrounds of Borambola, in the Riverina region of NSW, the week offered space to slow down, reflect and engage in meaningful experiences and discussions on mental health. We were greeted by cool, foggy mornings that slowly lifted into warm, sunshine-filled days - creating the perfect environment to connect with nature and each other. Students learned alongside our experts through shared activities, honest conversations and guided debriefs that brought theory to life in a way no classroom can.

We were fortunate to have a range of expert-led activities across the week. These included a calming meditation session, plenty of laughter through laugh therapy, a mindful nature walk, and craft sessions. Each session brought something unique, creating moments of reflection and connection for everyone involved.

For some of our lived experience experts, this was their very first Recovery Camp program! Their bravery and willingness to step in and have a go did not go unnoticed. It takes courage to share your story and lead others, and we are so proud of the way our new experts showed up, supported by the encouragement of our more experienced participants. This is what our programs are all about 💚

We also welcomed a few new Registered Nurse facilitators to the program, who embraced the experience with curiosity and energy. It’s always exciting to see new clinicians step into this space and grow their skills in such a unique, person-centred environment.

Of course, a big thank you to the Borambola NSW Office of Sport staff for hosting us for the week.

2026 is shaping up to be a big year, with more opportunities to get involved!

Ever spotted someone on public transport wearing this sunflower lanyard? 🌻

It indicates that this person has a hidden disability, helping staff to identify that they may need additional care and helping fellow passengers to show extra patience when needed 😌

It’s important to remember that not all disabilities are visible ❤️

Today is World Bipolar Day - an opportunity to challenge misconceptions, improve understanding and show support.

Mental health recovery looks different for everyone. That’s why it’s so important to listen to and learn from people with lived experience. Through open conversations and shared respect, we can build a more inclusive and compassionate community.

Reducing stigma starts with dispelling common myths. Bipolar is often misunderstood. It’s not simply “mood swings,” and it doesn’t define a person’s identity or capabilities. With the right support, many people living with bipolar lead meaningful, connected and fulfilling lives. When we move beyond stereotypes and take the time to understand the realities of living with bipolar, we create safer spaces for people to seek support, share their experiences and feel seen without judgement.

In Australia, bipolar affects around 2.9% of people aged 16 and over, or approximately 568,000 individuals.

Every experience is valid. Every journey is meaningful.

💙 Happy World Bipolar Day! 💙

Today we celebrate the strength, resilience, and community of everyone living with bipolar disorder, and the friends, families, and supporters who walk alongside them.

A quick update on tonight's event: unfortunately, due to unforeseen delays, we won't be able to screen the documentary as planned. We're really sorry for the disappointment, and we appreciate your understanding.

The good news? Our panel discussion is still going ahead and we can't wait. 🎙️

There's still time to register for tonight's webinar - come join the conversation, ask your questions, and be part of this important community moment.

This Sunday is International Women’s Day.

We celebrate women and girls in all their diversity, recognising the strength, leadership and compassion they bring to our community.

Recovery Camp is proud to have an entirely female operational team, co-led by our female founder - local women helping to build a better tomorrow for those with lived experience of mental health conditions, while improving the mental health workforce and reducing stigma.

We know that equality is not about advantage for some; it's about dignity, safety and fairness for all. When women and girls stand equal, families are stronger, workplaces are fairer, communities thrive and society becomes safer for everyone. IWD belongs to all who care about gender equality.

Every woman and girl, regardless of background or identity, should be safe and free to shape their own lives. Yet in 2026, too many across Australia and the world are still denied that.
These barriers are not inevitable.
They are built and they can be dismantled.

This , we celebrate the women who stand alongside others in their most vulnerable moments - creating spaces of connection, healing and hope.

19/02/2026

Today, we recognise the quiet strength and unwavering dedication of mental health nurses across Australia and around the world.

Across our programs, our experienced registered nurses work as facilitators - educating and mentoring the next generation of health professionals while standing alongside individuals in their most vulnerable moments, offering compassion and understanding. We acknowledge the future nurses coming through our programs on the mental health clinical placement, learning directly from lived experience experts – their knowledge is essential in shaping more empathetic, recovery-oriented care.

With over 25,000 mental health nurses across Australia, today is a reminder of the vital role they play in breaking stigma and strengthening our healthcare system.
