New blog post just out!! ✨ "Rhizomic Musings: Finding the Unexpected in Art and Healing"

Creativity isn’t a straight line. It twists, it sprawls and takes unexpected turns.

Much like a rhizome—branching, rupturing and re-forming—our creative process doesn’t always follow a predictable path. Instead, it moves through feeling, memory and intuition… often unfolding in ways we haven't planned and don't expect.

Lately, I’ve been leaning into this idea: what if creativity (and healing) isn’t about moving forward in a straight line but about surrendering to the ways it wants to emerge and transform?

Note: This one took me some time to write- phew 😅

Seedpod Creative Arts Studio is such a beautiful space. It is light and bright and full of art materials to explore! For me Seedpod can sometimes feel like a little world away from all the pressures of the outside world. I hope it does for you too. It is more important than ever that we make time for ourselves and our healing.

For those interested, I try and source furniture, and quite a large proportion of my art materials secondhand (e.g. from local Good Karma Networks, secondhand furniture shops, and op shops etc…). For me this remains an important ethical aspect of my practice.

Strengthening community connection is something I value highly. Connecting with others through artmaking can be really beneficial for both our health and wellbeing, and can also be fun and playful. I have really enjoyed facilitating these Art and Wellbeing sessions over the past 18months. Thanks Project Respect!

Project Respect is an intersectional feminist, non-faith based organisation, providing support to women and gender diverse people with experiences in the s*x industry, and also women and gender diverse people who have experiences of s*xual exploitation.

Watertank Project

This mural was created by participants of the monthly 'Art for Wellbeing' group at Project Respect in collaboration with Seedpod Creative Arts Studio. Watching the evolution of this tank was awe inspiring and it evolved just as it should have- with plenty of community spirit, creativity, enthusiasm and lots of tea and paint!

This landscape was created by participants to represent both ‘light’ and ‘dark’, recognising that we all have light and dark within our lives. The moon shown against a purple sunset represents women’s empowerment, and the tree is symbolic of strength.

It is hoped this artwork will continue to emerge as current and future service users of Project Respect are invited to add their very own personalised leaf to this tree. As each individual leaf is added with its own character and significance, it is hoped they will also begin to emerge together to symbolise a sense of community and togetherness.

Project Respect is a specialised support and referral service and peer community for women and gender diverse people with experience in the s*x industry, and for women and gender diverse people with experiences of trafficking for s*xual exploitation. https://www.projectrespect.org.au/

In this fun artistic process ‘No-Look Contour Drawing’, participants were encouraged not to look at their paper, just to place their pen to paper and in one continuous line (without lifting the pen from the paper) draw the object in front of them (in this case leaves and flowers). This practice invited us to pay close attention to the ‘edges’ of the object and slow down the process of observation- creating a sense of mindfullness and calm.

I found this process was really successful in a group setting. In a way I felt it let us all off the hook in worrying about the outcome, something participants also reflected upon. However, it was also a lovely surprise that everyone appeared to enjoy the outcome of their artworks as they were beautifully abstract, and very effective. We then added our own creative expressions to these pieces by adding colourful additions with watercolour paint. No expectations plus a great outcome- who could ask for more!

Note: The natural materials chosen for this process were picked by participants from the community garden 

The process of artmaking can be a powerful way to express our bodies felt sense and explore our emotions, often also allowing us to tap into our inner landscapes and letting our unconscious bubble to the surface through imagery and symbolism. Both the artmaking process and the artworks themselves can reflect much about our stories, identities, histories, dreams, desires, values, beliefs, and the ways in which we interact with the world.

Through artmaking we can find out more about ourselves, and although some of this can be beautiful and eye opening, it is not always ‘pretty’ or easy. Most of us hold parts of ourselves that have experienced pain, grief, loss, shame, guilt, anger etc…. so, it makes perfect sense that these emotions can also surface through the artmaking process.

As a qualified Arts Therapist I can support individuals through the process of identifying and processing these difficult emotions as well the difficulties people may face the world. I work in a person-centred and strength-based based way, honouring people where they are at (and their lived experience) as well as moving towards self-healing, growth and positive change.

Just playing around with some wood slices, acrylic paint and Posca pens today at Seedpod Creative Arts Studio. Making some time for a wee bit of playfulness and experimentation, listening to music and feeling in the flow. A dear friend joined me with our doggo's in tow! A good reminder to make time for art, friends and also our furry friends :) Art-making can be such a great contributor to our ongoing wellbeing. Today, taking the time to get out of my head felt important somehow.
