Honoured that the Adelaide Tinnitus Clinic is a finalist in the Australian Small Business Champion Awards in the Professional Medical Services category.

While it can be a night to hand out simple business cards while networking, I’ll be sharing these goodie bags instead, so people can find a tinnitus professional near them, raising awareness that support is available.

Included are reusable musician plugs, thanks to my friends at Audeara 🙏 Because awards nights are always lively, and protecting your hearing now means you’re less likely to end up in my clinic later.

(I even gave their logo some hearing protection too. A simple reminder even champions need to protect their hearing).

Honoured to have contributed to this episode of ABC Australia Behind the News: High School Edition, which explores the issue of noise-induced hearing loss in young people.

Alongside Sarah Swann, we discussed the impact of recreational noise—from concerts and rehearsals to gaming headsets and headphones—and why protecting your hearing early matters.

As an audiologist, Occupational Noise Assessor, and founder of The Ambient Menu , I’ve seen how tinnitus and hearing damage are becoming far too common.

And it’s not just professional musicians at risk. Teenagers using headphones at high volumes, attending loud gigs, and playing in school bands are increasingly showing signs of noise-induced hearing damage.

🔊 Once hearing is damaged, it's often permanent.
🧠 Tinnitus can also deeply affect mental health and wellbeing.
🎶 But with preventative strategies—like volume limits, earplugs, and smart listening habits—we can protect the sounds we love.

At Adelaide Tinnitus Clinic, we work with young people, musicians, and schools to help prevent permanent hearing damage. Simple changes—like using hearing protection, turning the volume down, and taking listening breaks—can make a huge difference.

Big thanks to Sarah Swann for her insights and to the students who shared their stories.

Let’s get this conversation into every music room, rehearsal studio, and classroom.

Experts are seeing more and more young people coming into clinics with hearing damage. ✏️

Last week, I had the pleasure of presenting to the wonderful team at Audika about tinnitus care.

At Adelaide Tinnitus Clinic, we work exclusively with tinnitus, hyperacusis, and misophonia. I’m passionate about equipping both patients and clinicians with the tools and strategies needed to navigate these conditions. The goaal is for every patient to leave their first appointment with an audiologist knowing that tinnitus is manageable—with the right support and information.

During the session, we explored practical pathways for assessing, educating, and referring tinnitus patients. I shared real case studies that highlighted the importance of looking beyond the ears—into the musculoskeletal system, and into how tinnitus can intersect with stress and trauma. We also covered how to build effective communication, and how to integrate the latest apps and equipment used in sound therapy.

It was a privilege to support other clinicians in growing their confidence and skills in tinnitus care—so more people can feel heard, validated, and hopeful.

To anyone living with tinnitus: you’re not alone, and help is available.

Occasional Ear Noise or Tinnitus – What’s the Difference?

Not all ear noise is tinnitus! Tinnitus is a sound in the ears or head that lasts at least five minutes and occurs at least weekly.

But what if the sound is less frequent? That’s called occasional ear noise - causes include:

🧠 Temporary stress or fatigue – Can heighten your awareness of internal sounds.
🎧 Loud noise exposure – After concerts or loud environments, your ears may ring briefly.
👃 Blocked ears – Earwax, congestion, or sinus pressure can cause crackling or ringing.
📉 Changes in blood pressure – Especially during posture shifts or exercise.
🌀 Jaw or neck tension – Issues like temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJd) or neck strain can cause occasional noise.

If you’re unsure whether your ear noise is occasional or tinnitus, an audiology assessment can help. Early evaluation and hearing conservation strategies may prevent tinnitus from becoming persistent.

🔊 Tinnitus & Hearing Loss: What’s the Link?

Did you know most people with tinnitus also have some level of hearing loss? 👂💥
Here’s why that matters ⬇️

1️⃣ They usually show up together
➡️ The pattern of hearing loss can match the tinnitus pitch.

2️⃣ Both related to inner ear damage
➡️ Loud noise = damaged cochlear hair cells = damage affects nerve pathways = tinnitus.

3️⃣ Hearing aids help with BOTH
➡️ Hearing aids amplify soft environmental sounds. They not only compensate for hearing loss, but hearing those environmental sounds 'mask' the tinnitus - making it less noticeable.
4️⃣ Better education = better results
➡️ When people understand the link, they get better outcomes.

💬 Bottom line? Treat the ears, not just the noise.

What a Week at the Audiology Australia Conference! 🎶🦻

I had the incredible opportunity to present twice this week—and I’m thrilled to share that my Music & Hearing Health Project won the Best Clinical Poster Presentation award! 🏆

This project is close to my heart because my goal is simple: if we educate young musicians now, they hopefully won’t need Adelaide Tinnitus Clinic in the future. Prevention is key, and by raising awareness about hearing protection and safe listening levels, we can help the next generation prevent tinnitus, hearing loss and hyperacusis.

My second presentation was on The Ambient Menu, my passion project to make dining more inclusive for people with sound sensitivity. Whether it’s tinnitus, hyperacusis, or general noise discomfort, everyone deserves to enjoy a meal out without feeling overwhelmed by background noise.

Every day, I see how vital education and advocacy are—not just in clinics but in real-world spaces like high schools, music venues and restaurants.

A huge thank you to AudA for having me, and to everyone who attended, listened, and supported my work. It was amazing to connect with like minded hearing health professionals and bring back valuable insights to Adelaide Tinnitus Clinic.

If you or someone you know struggles with tinnitus or noise sensitivity, we’re here to help. 💙

With Tinnitus Awareness Week approaching, there’s an incredible webinar you won’t want to miss!

Hosted by two of the most knowledgeable and passionate voices in the tinnitus space—Myriam Westcott and Victoria Didenko—this webinar is a must for anyone looking to better understand tinnitus and sound sensitivity disorders.

I recently had the privilege of completing a tinnitus placement with Myriam, and I can confidently say her expertise in tinnitus and hyperacusis management is unmatched.

Victoria Didenko brings a powerful lived experience perspective, having navigated chronic tinnitus for over a decade. Her advocacy work, including leading Tinnitus Australia and founding "My Ear Rings for Peace," has helped raise awareness and support for those living with tinnitus. She is also a talented mezzo-soprano and understands firsthand the impact tinnitus can have on musicians.

This webinar is perfect for anyone experiencing tinnitus, healthcare professionals, or those wanting to stay up to date on evidence-based management approaches.
