Bowel/Colorectal Cancer:
Did you know?
Bowel cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among Australian men. Symptoms may include: changes in bowel habits, blood present in stools and/or persistent abdominal discomfort (cramping, gas, pain).
Regular screening, including stool tests and colonoscopies, is recommended, especially for men over 50 or those with a family history of bowel cancer. This increases the likelihood of early detection and successful responses to treatment. Eating a diet high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, maintaining a healthy weight, staying physically active, limiting alcohol, and not smoking are also thought to significantly decrease the risk of developing bowel cancer.
Exercise has been shown to provide the following benefits for individuals with bowel cancer:
🚶♂️ Improved Digestive Health: Regular physical activity can promote healthy bowel movements and reduce constipation, a common issue during cancer treatment.
✊ Greater Sense of Control: Exercising gives patients a proactive role in their health management, fostering a sense of control and empowerment.
⚖️ Weight Management: Maintaining a healthy weight is crucial, as obesity is a risk factor for both the development and recurrence of bowel cancer.
It's important to note that individual responses to exercise may vary. Therefore, it's recommended for individuals to consult with their healthcare team before commencing any new exercise program.
