World Health Day April 7

Celebrating the contribution of science!

This is a great article on the science of MLD vs Pressure/Lymphatic Massage.

A field that was dominated by Swedish and Sports Massage when I entered, has expanded into a sophisticated array of bodywork specialties. Today, remedial and allied health professionals embrace a suite of modalities to address complex physiological needs. Some techniques, such as Manual Lymph Draina...

It's been a good few days interacting with the public about Lymphoedema, and it's been incredibly rewarding!
Lymphoedema massage and dry brushing were hot topics, & are big in the wellness sector, with many products on the market. But, you can achieve great results without splurging on costly products. Creams and ointments work because of their added properties or the massage technique itself.
My go-to recommendation is a silicone dish sponge - it's soft, firm, and hygienic. You can also add the massage sequence into your daily routine, like when you're washing, drying, and moisturising. To help stimulate you Lymph system.
The secret to success lies in grasping the lymphatic massage sequence, which entails deep breathing, clearing the way proximal of the heart before massaging further areas distal, and gentle upward strokes to the heart.
Depending on the situation, this sequence may need to be altered for secondary Lymphoedema resulting from surgery or radiation, finding a new path for lymphatic flow.
Which a recognised Lymphoedema Therapist can guide you with.

Where a person lives should not determine the care they receive.
Across community, residential, rural and regional settings, lymphatic healthcare professionals work to reduce barriers and strengthen referral pathways.
Delivering services closer to home. Supporting continuity of care. Advocating for equitable access across metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas.
Geography may shape practice environments. It should never limit quality.
United in Care. Diverse in Practice.

Good lymphatic healthcare is not defined by a single technique. It is defined by ongoing standards.

This includes comprehensive assessment, evidence-informed management, and ongoing, patient-centred care.

These are not optional extras. They are the foundation of safe and effective practice.

When practitioners uphold professional responsibility, patients experience better outcomes, greater confidence in their care, and stronger long-term support.

The ALA exists to champion these standards and support the professionals who deliver them.

Because good care protects patients

Swollen feet and legs should never be dismissed as “just one of those things.”
Persistent, unexplained lower limb swelling can lead to infection, chronic wounds and long-term health complications if left untreated. With summer heat, travel, disrupted routines and dehydration all contributing to worsening symptoms, now is the time to talk about it.
Today, 19 February 2026, the ALA is proud to support national Beat the Swell Day, led by Wounds Australia - with ALA President, Kath Turner sitting on the panel of the flagship event, being hosted this evening.
Beat the Swell is an annual opportunity to raise awareness about:
• the causes of lower limb swelling
• the risks of leaving swelling untreated
• prevention and early detection
• effective, evidence-based treatment
The day brings together professional learning for clinicians and practical education for consumers, because awareness is the first step toward better outcomes.
