Vale Barbara Rosemary Haynes OAM

The Trustees and staff of the RMH Neuroscience Foundation extend our deepest condolences to David Johnston and the Haynes Family on the passing of their beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Barbara Haynes.

Barbara lived an active and impactful life. She will be fondly remembered for her dedication to helping others, supporting medical education and research through the Warren Haynes Neuroscience Research Fellowship since 1998.

With our thoughts and sympathies, we share the family obituary:

---

Terrific mother to Jen and Cath, widow of the late Warren Haynes, dearly beloved wife of David Johnston, much loved sister to Inge and Marg, Grannie to James, Will, Max, Celeste, and Lucy, favourite mother-in-law to Pete, and aunt to Ian, James, Geoff, and Liz.

She loved her family, her friends, and her Henkel Champagne (piccolo). A Friend of the Royal Melbourne Hospital, a Patron of RMH Music Therapy, sole benefactor of the Warren Haynes Fellowship at the RMH Neuroscience Foundation, and a Patron of Corpus Medicorum, Barbara was an inspiring philanthropist. She was a kind and wise woman, with a wicked sense of humour, she was widely loved and will be dearly missed.

Private Family Cremation and Memorial Service to be advised.

Did you know that 35% of our current research trials are commercially funded?

Medical and pharmaceutical companies sponsor The Royal Melbourne Hospital and its patients to participate in their clinical trials.

Our dementia researchers have been part of the global commercial trial TRAILBLAZER – established by Eli Lilly, the pharmaceutical company behind the drug Donanemab – for the treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease.

This week, Head of Asia Pacific Clinical Trials at Eli Lilly, Andrew Huxley, gives us a glimpse into the process – and success of this trial – as a Sponsor.

Do you know who pays the bills?

While our rockstar researchers are doing the work, most of our non-commercial trials rely on philanthropic funding to get off the ground.

That’s where our donors and supporters make the biggest difference.

With 1 in 6 Australians affected by brain disease, chances are everyone knows someone impacted — and some choose to turn that connection into action.

This week, we shine a light on one of those change-makers, with a visit to Kyneton Aero Club to meet Warren Canning and hear about their long-running monthly fundraiser.

So, where does our knowledge of brain disease at a cellular level come from?

We need scientific experts to gain understanding of how brain cells behave, giving us the insight required to develop treatments and prevent conditions such as brain tumours.

One of these experts is Lead Scientist, Professor Lucy Palmer, who heads the Neural Network Laboratory at The Florey.

Lucy gives us a sneak peek inside the lab and shares how their experiments are helping build a clearer understanding in the combat of brain disease.

Did you know that for some trials, our research patients visit weekly, with some travelling from interstate or driving for hours to be here?

These research trials simply wouldn’t be possible without the commitment of our participants — generous individuals who step forward in the face of life-altering trauma and diagnosis.

This week in our 6 Series, we travel to one of them – Tim, a post-stroke patient – for a snippet with a Survivor.

Ever wondered who’s powering the daily work behind this big machine?

Over the next 6 weeks, we’ll introduce you to a small sample of our key collaborators - the people driving our research into brain disease.

To kick us off, here’s a snippet with a Surgeon – A/Prof Andrew Davidson.

Stay tuned each week for a new face, new story, and a fresh perspective on the work we do.

From Heartbreak to Hope: Nurturing Minds Legacy

When RMH ICU nurse Jaimee tragically lost her mum to a fatal mycotic aneurysm in 2024, she was determined to create something meaningful in her memory.

Thus, the Nurturing Minds Legacy was born – a heartfelt initiative dedicated to supporting neuroscience research and awareness, starting with the inaugural Pilates in the Park fundraiser.
