Support Worker Tip Series – Tip #8

Big tasks can sometimes feel overwhelming — especially when someone is already anxious, tired, dysregulated, or unsure where to start.

Breaking activities into smaller, achievable steps can help build confidence, reduce stress, and create more successful outcomes.

Instead of focusing on the entire task, support one step at a time:
✔️ “Let’s start by putting your shoes on.”
✔️ “First we’ll pack your bag, then we’ll head to the car.”
✔️ “Great job — now let’s do the next part together.”

Small wins matter.
Celebrating progress, no matter how small, helps build motivation, independence, and self-belief.

Helpful strategies include:
• Using visual supports or checklists
• Giving one instruction at a time
• Modelling the task first
• Allowing extra processing time
• Praising effort and progress

At Axia, we believe support is about creating achievable pathways that empower people to succeed at their own pace.

Support Worker Tip Series – Tip #7

Offering choices is a simple but powerful way to support autonomy, reduce anxiety, and build cooperation.

When people feel they have some control over their environment, they are often more engaged and less resistant. Small choices can make a big difference.

Instead of:
❌ “You need to do this now.”

Try:
✔️ “Would you like to do this first or after lunch?”
✔️ “Do you want option A or option B?”
✔️ “Would you like help, or would you like to try independently first?”

Choice-making:
• Builds trust and respect
• Encourages independence
• Reduces power struggles
• Supports emotional regulation
• Promotes person-centred support

At Axia, we believe empowering people starts with listening, respecting preferences, and creating opportunities for choice every day.

Support Worker Tip Series – Tip #6

When emotions escalate, the most powerful tool you have is your own regulation.

People often mirror the emotional energy around them. If we respond with urgency, frustration, or raised voices, situations can escalate quickly. But when we stay calm, grounded, and predictable, we help create safety.

Remember:
✔️ Slow your voice
✔️ Slow your movements
✔️ Give space when needed
✔️ Use calm, clear language
✔️ Focus on reassurance, not control

Co-regulation is a key part of positive behaviour support. Your calm presence can help someone feel safe enough to regulate themselves.

At Axia, we believe support starts with connection, compassion, and understanding.
