Women with Disabilities ACT

Women with Disabilities ACT WWDACT is a systemic advocacy organisation for women, non-binary and gender diverse people in the ACT.

We work in the areas of policy, systemic advocacy and community engagement. WWDACT follows a human rights philosophy, based on the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the Convention on the Elimination of (All Forms Of) Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). We work with government and non-government organisations to improve the status and lives of women with disabilities in the ACT and surrounding region.

Congratulations to the WWDACT Policy Advisory Committee (PAC) on their nomination for a Chief Minister’s Inclusion Award - Excellence in Collaborating with People with Disability.

Members of the PAC, WWDACT Staff members and Board attended the Chief Minister’s Inclusion Awards on the 10th December to celebrate their nomination and the wonderful achievements of the last 3 years.

The PAC has been involved in all elements of WWDACT’s advocacy and are a key part of the organisation. They have been instrumental in our advocacy successes over the past few years, including the passage of the Disability Inclusion Act, the scoping of a Perinatal Mental Health Centre, increased awareness around the reproductive rights of people with disabilities, and community engagement of older women with disabilities - just to name a few.

We were delighted to have the opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the PAC and wish to thank the Inclusion Awards team for supporting our attendance at the awards.

A special congratulations to WWDACT member, workshop facilitator extraordinaire and friend of WWDACT Ebe Ganon, who received the Sue Salthouse Award for Championing Human Rights and Equality on the night. Well deserved!

Congratulations to all winners and nominees!

Sending special love and appreciation to PAC members Robyn Davis and Lauren Cannell who were unable to make it on the night.

November 20th - today - is Trans Remembrance Day. As WWDACT's membership and advocacy includes all women, whether cis or trans, and gender diverse people, we would like to acknowledge, honour, and remember all the trans lives affected by violence.

As per ACON's words below, far too many trans people have and continue to be subjected to trans misogyny and transphobia. This is often compounded for trans individuals with disabilities, who face even more barriers accessing healthcare and disability support. For those people, Transhub - which has recently gone national - is a fantastic resource for finding transgender-related medical and other supports.

Today, and every day, we value, support, and welcome our trans community members.
