So what do coaches actually mean when they talk about nutrient timing?

Nutrient timing is the strategic planning of when to eat and drink to best support an athletes training cycle. It’s often linked to the term ‘optimal fuelling’

It’s about matching your intake to the demand of the session so you can:
✔️ maximise energy
✔️ enhance recovery
✔️ support tissue repair
✔️ improve muscle growth
✔️ boost the adaptive response to training

This approach is most beneficial for athletes or those training in a performance-focused environment where quality, volume and recovery matter.

For the general population, nutrient timing is not the magic ticket - overall daily intake still matters most.
