Did you know that at least 75% of patients with asthma may ALSO have allergic rhinitis (AR)? Well, fun fact: Allergies and asthma CAN often occur together. Patients with asthma can have both allergic or non-allergic rhinitis. Therefore, symptoms of AR can be mistaken for asthma and vice versa.
Allergic rhinitis is an independent risk factor for developing asthma. The presence of allergic rhinitis is linked with poor asthma control. Both AR and Asthma can have the same triggers, whether allergic (dust mites, animal dander, pollen, cockroaches) or non-specific (cold air, strong smells, environmental to***co smoke).
It is important to use the correct treatment for both conditions. If you present similar symptoms and are unsure if you should be treating asthma or allergic rhinitis, consult your doctor or visit your local pharmacy for further help.
