🌿 Changing the Way We Connect: Introducing Welcome Yarns at Superyou

Have you heard about Welcome Yarns?

It's a powerful new initiative developed and implemented by several passionate team members here at Superyou, and it's transforming the way we connect with First Nations clients in our community. Here's what one of those team members - Superyou OT, Layla - said.

🗣️ Why Welcome Yarns?

"After attending cultural training with Noongar leader Ingrid Cu***ng, each participant at Superyou developed a personal Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). My RAP focused on bridging gaps in client care. From personal experience, I knew that the onboarding process often creates unintended barriers for First Nations clients. With guidance from my colleagues, myself and the team worked to find a more culturally appropriate, respectful, and empowering way to begin client relationships.

That led to the creation of Welcome Yarns!"

🌱 What Is a Welcome Yarn?

"A Welcome Yarn is more than just a conversation or an onboarding session. Iit's a safe, culturally sensitive alternative to the traditional intake process. Instead of diving straight into medical checklists or paperwork, we create a warm, open space for First Nations clients to share their stories and experiences in a way that feels natural and respectful.

For Noongar clients, the Welcome Yarn follows the Noongar Trilogy:

✨ Boodja (Country/Land)
We start by talking about connection to land and belonging, with questions like "What's your mob?" and "Where were you born?". This helps us start the journey with our client through meaningful conversation and trust-building.
👨‍👩‍👧 Moort (Family)
Next, we'll explore family connections, identity, and community ties, to honor the importance of kinship and cultural continuity.
📚 Kaatijin (Knowledge)
This is where we listen to personal stories and cultural knowledge, gathering important insights into each client's lived experience.

A community map/eco map is often used as well, to guide the yarn and help us understand roles, relationships, and daily life of our clients!"

At its core, Welcome Yarns is about closing the gap, fostering genuine relationships, and ensuring that healthcare and support services are delivered with cultural safety and integrity. It's one of the ways we're reimagining therapy in WA. We are so proud of Layla and her team members for recognising an essential piece was missing for some of our clients, and advocating to ensure we can provide it going forward. 🫶

Here's how Superyou celebrated NAIDOC Week 2025, marking 50 years of honouring and elevating Indigenous voices, culture, and resilience!

The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy
Celebrating Art & Culture

This year’s NAIDOC theme is a powerful celebration of our collective journey. We honour the achievements of the past, embrace the strength of our emerging leaders, and look forward with the vision of our communities and the enduring legacy of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ancestors.

At our Walyalup Hub, we’ve brought this vision to life through meaningful collaboration. We partnered with Noongar and Yamatji women to host a contemporary Aboriginal dot painting workshop, creating a safe space for cultural expression, connection, and storytelling.

What does this artwork represent?
• At its heart is community, symbolised by the central circle. This represents not only the Walyalup Superyou community, but also everyone touched by those within it. Community has many meanings, and we invite each person to interpret it in a way that resonates with their own experience.
• The black outer rings and the surrounding people symbols are also part of this broader concept of community. The black rings reflect the barriers often faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples—barriers that are real and ongoing. The people figures represent our team, standing together in support and solidarity.
• Together, these elements show that community is not just a centre. It’s a living, breathing network of people, challenges, and support systems. As Janelle Brahim shared, “Sometimes it takes blackfellas two steps forward outside the black circle, and sometimes two steps back. It’s a conversation.”
• The hands are a powerful symbol of our contribution, leaving our mark, giving back, and guiding with care and respect.
• The purple tones evoke a sense of connection, healing, and belonging; our aspiration for every person who walks through our doors.

This piece is more than art—it’s a conversation starter, and visual story of unity, resilience, and hope. It reflects our ongoing commitment to fostering a culturally secure environment where every individual feels seen, supported, and celebrated.

A heartfelt thank you to the beautiful Yorgas who made this artwork— and our NAIDOC Week celebration—so special.

Thank you, Ebony, Brooke, and Janelle for sharing your culture, creativity, and strength with us.

As National Reconciliation Week comes to a close today, we also acknowledge Mabo Day in honour of the legacy of Eddie Koiki Mabo from Mer Island, whose landmark efforts led to the historic recognition that Australia was not a land without ownership prior to colonisation.

Throughout the week, like others across the nation, our team has been reflecting on the complex and shared history of this country. We've taken the opportunity to deepen our understanding of First Nations cultures and consider the ways we can actively support reconciliation. The National Reconciliation Week theme, ‘Bridging Now to Next’, urged us to look ahead and continue the push forward towards a more invited and respectful nation as past lessons guide us.

Our Fremantle crew made some Lilly Pilly jam and engaged in colouring in whilst yarning about what reconciliation means for us and how we can celebrate it at work and in our personal lives. They also looked through dream time, bush tucker and other culturally significant books. They talked about the footy, the significance of the Sir Doug Nicolls Round and how we all appreciate the Welcome to Country ceremonies. They also talked about truth telling, and engaging in arts and craft activities like drawing during sessions with clients.

And our Bassendean crew spent time having a ‘sew your own scrunchie or lanyard’ evening with some lovely snacks and important discussions. This was a great time to get together and make a scrunchie or lanyard using fabric designed by First Nations. They also held a colouring-in station, where our clinicians were able to take colouring to their client sessions or let our clients choose their own when they are in the clinic.

While we enjoy getting together to acknowledge and celebrate the importance of National Reconciliation Week, we're also taking the time to reflect on our commitment to carrying forward the lessons and insights gained this week, and all year round. We'll keep looking at how we can ensure we're embedding them into our actions and mindsets, both as an organisation and as individuals, as we continue the journey of reconciliation.

Superyou Speech Pathologist, Tanith, was invited to present at the joint Education Support South and North Networks Conference (ESSN) today on emergent literacy instruction for students with diverse communication and access needs.

It was inspiring to connect with so many educators with the shared belief that “no student is too anything to be able to read and write”.

At Superyou Therapy, our School Services Team works collaboratively with school communities to build capacity in using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems and alternative access technologies (such as eye gaze and switch access) to ensure all students can access the curriculum.

Communication and literacy skills go hand in hand and we are passionate about making learning accessible for every student!

Let's make it clear - ABA ≠ NDA

While Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) has long been used to support neurodivergent individuals, we believe ABA is not considered a neurodiversity-affirming (NDA) approach and we don't use it here at Superyou.

Why?

✅ NDA approaches focus on respecting neurodivergent identities, prioritising autonomy, and supporting individuals without trying to "fix" or mask who they are.
❌ Traditional ABA typically centres around compliance-based goals, which do not align with neurodiversity-affirming values.

Without ABA then, what's our preferred approach? Well, when working with all clients, we take a strengths-based, respectful and collaborative approach to supporting our clients. We focus on the positives of being a unique individual and consider how to tailor our therapy to suit you, instead of asking you to fit into the constraints of any one specific approach.💛

Community and home therapy vs. clinic based sessions. Is one more beneficial than the other?

Evidence tells us people learn best when they are somewhere they feel comfortable and safe. For most, that’s at home or somewhere in the community!

Plus, when practicing new skills in a location where you might use them independently, it’s easier for those skills to generalise (which means what we work on in therapy typically transfers more easily to your everyday life!).

In our latest blog, we explore the differences between home and community vs. clinic based sessions, and explain how it can benefit clients to work on their goals at home or in the community!

🧠💪 When should you see a physio?

People often think of physiotherapy as strictly for sports injuries, but that couldn't be further from the truth!

Physiotherapists support individuals with a range of different requirements, such as those with neurodevelopmental conditions (e.g., cerebral palsy, spina bifida, or autism), and acquired disability (e.g., Parkinson's, acquired brain injury, or spinal cord injury).

Our NDIS physiotherapists see young clients learning to walk and crawl, and older clients in their 80s and 90s wanting to prioritise their fitness and wellbeing, and improve their quality of life!

Physiotherapists can help when you're faced with challenges such as:

✅ Recently injured?
✅ Living with a chronic condition?
✅ Finding daily tasks, movement or personal care harder than usual?
✅ Feeling your physical function is declining?

So, if you have any concerns, don't wait for things to get worse! Physio can help improve your mobility, ease pain, and support your overall well-being — both physically and mentally.

💬 Reach out to our team today (we have immediate availability at BOTH our Bassendean and Wanneroo hubs!) through the link -> https://bit.ly/42AwtDE

Discover personalised NDIS physiotherapy services with Superyou Therapy. Our experienced clinicians provide tailored support to clients of all ages!
