Just catching my breath after attending this year's Australian Diabetes Congress here in Perth.

The advancements in diabetes care are truly exciting, and it’s so uplifting to connect with health professionals who share my passion for person-centered care.

This event always inspires me to keep improving, learning and growing to be the best clinician I can be - feeling very grateful for this opportunity 💙

It's National Diabetes Week, and it's fantastic to see that this year's focus is on equitable access to diabetes technology.

Throughout my career, I've witnessed remarkable advancements in diabetes technology. There are now numerous outstanding options available for people living with diabetes. The evidence is clear: these technologies not only improve diabetes management and reduce the risk of long-term health complications, but they also alleviate the mental burden associated with managing the condition. This relief extends beyond the individual to their loved ones—something I can personally attest to.

However, in Australia, access to this life-changing technology is limited. It's a situation of the haves and have-nots, as the costs are prohibitively expensive. People with Type 1 Diabetes need high-level hospital cover health insurance to access an insulin pump, which isn't affordable for everyone, especially with the current cost of living. Additionally, people with Type 2 or other types of diabetes must pay completely out of pocket for Continuous Glucose Monitoring.

Access is crucial. Why develop these technologies if people can't use them?

Let's hope this campaign and the recent parliamentary inquiry drive meaningful change.
