🥶 Triage Tuesday: Hidden hypothermia in Perth’s winter 🥶

We’re lucky in Perth — winter often brings clear skies and beautiful sunny days (not so much today, but how good was last week!?!). But don’t be fooled. As the temperature drops overnight or during early mornings, the risk of hypothermia still exists — especially for children, older adults, campers, rough sleepers, and anyone working outdoors.

🌡️ What is hypothermia?
When the body’s core temperature drops below 35°C, vital systems slow down. It can be life-threatening if not recognised and treated early.

❄️ Recognising the stages of hypothermia
MILD hypothermia (32–35°C):
• Shivering
• Pale, cool skin
• Impaired coordination
• Slurred speech
• Responsive, but possibly with delayed responses

MODERATE (28–32°C) to SEVERE (

🩹 Triage Tuesday: Sprains & Strains 🦵
Injuries happen fast — be faster with first aid that follows Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines.

🤕 Sprains involve ligaments (connect bone to bone)
💪 Strains affect muscles or tendons (connect muscle to bone)

📖 ARC-recommended first aid: R.I.C.E.R.
R – Rest: Avoid movement to prevent further injury
I – Ice: Apply for 15–20 minutes every 2 hours for the first 48–72 hours
C – Compression: Use a firm bandage to help reduce swelling
E – Elevation: Raise the injured area above heart level if possible
R – Referral: Get professional medical advice

🚫 And don’t forget to avoid H.A.R.M. in the first 72 hours:
H – Heat
A – Alcohol
R – Running
M – Massage

Quick action can reduce recovery time and improve outcomes.

🔥 Last week we delivered a fire training course for the Design & Tech team at Trinity College — and what a session it was! 🔥

We explored the science and classes of fire, the right extinguishers for the job, and the importance of acting early. Staff got hands-on with extinguishers, discussed their new FIP and we walked through their space to assess risks to ensure safety to themselves and their students.

The team were engaged, asked great questions, and left more confident in their response to a fire emergency.

📣 If you're a school looking to upskill your staff with practical, engaging fire safety training — get in touch! The feedback was overwhelmingly positive and we'd love to help your team too.

This is the actual bee and it's sting! 🐝

We took the kids camping down south last weekend, and of course—there’s always something to keep you on your toes (literally)! My wife got stung by this bee.

We removed the sting using a credit card (quick tip: don’t use tweezers as they can squeeze more venom in!) and iced the area, keeping an eye out for any swelling or spread.

Luckily, she’s not allergic. It got us thinking, though—what if it had been more serious? My brother developed a sudden anaphylactic allergy in his mid-twenties and ended up in ED.

Would you know what to do? Here’s a quick guide:

🐝 Basic Bee Sting First Aid:
✅ Remove the sting by scraping with a credit card (avoid tweezers)
✅ Wash the area with soap and water
✅ Apply ice to reduce swelling and pain
✅ Monitor for allergic reactions like hives, swelling, or difficulty breathing

🚨 Anaphylaxis (Severe Allergic Reaction):
❗ Call emergency services immediately
❗ Lay the person down and keep them calm
❗ Use an EpiPen if available—remember: Blue to the sky, orange to the thigh!
❗ If no improvement after 5 minutes, use a second EpiPen

Emergencies can come out of nowhere—are you ready? Knowing what to do could save a life.

❤️‍🩹 Think you could deliver effective CPR to someone in need? ❤️‍🩹

Hand placement, Depth and Timing - 3 core elements of CPR compressions - do it right and you could literally save someone's life!

🗺 Location, location, location!
Place the heel of your hand on the centre of their chest. Place your other hand on top, interlock the fingers or brace your wrist - whatever feels most comfortable.

🫀Dig deep and push!
How deep is deep enough: 1/3 depth of their chest. This is relative to them so do what you need to do to achieve this depth. E.g. 2 hands for adults, 2 fingers for infants.

⏰ Timing is everything!
If compressions are too slow, the heart won’t pump enough blood to the brain. Too fast and you won’t allow the heart to refill properly.

💥 The sweet spot? 100-120 compressions per minute. That’s 2 compressions per second.

🎶 A great way to keep the rhythm? Think of songs like “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees or “Baby Shark.” They match the same timing required for CPR! 🎶

If performed correctly, CPR can save a life. Would you know what to do in an emergency?

Tag a friend who should know this! 👇

1. Centre of the chest
2. 1/3 depth
3. 2 compressions per second

🔥 Fire Safety Friday - in the Kitchen: Dos & Don'ts 🔥

Did you know that kitchen fires are one of the leading causes of house fires? A small mistake or inattention can turn into a dangerous situation within seconds. Here’s how to stay safe while cooking!

✅ DO:
✔️ Keep a fire extinguisher and fire blanket nearby (and know how to use them!)
✔️ Stay in the kitchen while cooking - never leave food unattended
✔️ Keep flammable items away from the stove (tea towels, paper towels, curtains)
✔️ If a small oil fire starts, smother it with a lid - never use water!

❌ DON’T:
✖️ Never throw water on an oil fire - it makes it worse!
✖️ Don’t heat oil too quickly - it can ignite without warning
✖️ Never use a damp cloth to put out a fire - it can create steam burns
✖️ Don’t ignore a burning smell - act fast and check your stove

🔥 What to do if a fire starts?
✔️ Stay calm and turn off the heat source
✔️ Smother small flames with a lid or fire blanket
✔️ If the fire is out of control, evacuate and call 000 immediately!

Kitchen safety starts with good habits!

Sports Injury First Aid: 7 Steps every athlete should know 🏀 ⚽ 🏋🏽‍♀️

In sport, injuries happen fast. Knowing what to do immediately can prevent further damage and speed up recovery. Follow these 7 essential first aid steps:

1️⃣ Check for Danger – Ensure the environment is safe before assisting. Watch for hazards like falling weights, uneven ground, flying objects or other players.

2️⃣ Check for a Response – If the athlete is down, ask them, "Are you okay?", "Can you hear me?" - If unconscious, follow DRSABCD.

3️⃣ Call for Help – Dial 000 for serious injuries like being unresponsive, fractures, head trauma, or spinal injuries. Don’t move them unless necessary - if required, maintain spinal alignment and minimise any twisting.

4️⃣ Immobilise Fractures & Sprains – If a break is suspected, do not realign the bone. Use a splint or support the area and seek urgent medical care. Keep them comfortable.

5️⃣ Control Bleeding & Treat Wounds – Apply firm pressure with a clean bandage to stop bleeding. Clean minor cuts with saline and cover with a sterile dressing.

6️⃣ Use RICER for Soft Tissue Injuries – Rest, Ice (20min on / 2hrs off), Compression, Elevation, Referral to a doctor for sprains, strains, or bruises.

7️⃣ Monitor for Concussion or Shock – Signs of concussion include dizziness, confusion, nausea, vision issues or memory loss. If the athlete is pale, cold, or disoriented, keep them lying down with legs elevated, loosen tight clothing, keep warm and seek medical help.

⚠️ DO NOT:🚫 Move an injured athlete with a suspected spinal injury.🚫 Let someone with a head injury return to play too soon.🚫 Ignore pain - early treatment prevents longterm issues. ⚠️

Injuries happen but fast, but quick first aid makes all the difference. Stay prepared!
