Want that supermodel quality skin? Don’t we all! Sadly your skin doesn’t always want to cooperate. Just about everyone experiences skin problems at some point in their life and they can not only affect your health but also hamper your confidence.
Fortunately, medicine is here to help! Here are three common skin conditions that can be treated.

1. Acne: contrary to popular belief pimples don’t just afflict teens, many adults are affected as well. Lots of different factors can contribute to the condition including stress, sweating, humidity, and diet but fortunately, there’s a range of effective medical treatments available too.

2. Rosacea: it’s a widespread inflammatory disease that causes redness of the skin and if left untreated can grow worse over time.

3. Sunburn: nobody looks good in lobster-red so be always responsible when you’re going to be exposed to sunlight. Sunburn is no joke so slip, slop, slap already!

Does exercise feel like a real chore? If you’re trying to build a healthier fitter you in 2018 but struggle to find the motivation, here is three easy tricks to squeeze in more exercise.

1. Keep it short and sweet. Whether you’re pressed for time or just can’t be bothered with a long workout (we get it!), you’ll still reap the health benefits from regular ten-minute chunks of exercise.

2. Sneak it with your daily routine. Take the stairs when you can or go for a walk while you wait for an appointment, there are lots of little ways you can increase your physical activity.

3. Have fun! It won’t feel so much like exercise if you’re enjoying it. Join a sports team or turn catching up with friends into an activity: yoga, swimming, whatever.

Are you still having your yearly Pap smear? Well, say so long! In 2018 they’ll be replaced by HPV tests. The bad news is that the new procedure will likely be as uncomfortable but the good news is that HPV tests are more accurate and will improve early detection. In addition, they will only need to be performed every 5 years and you won’t have to start until you’re 25 years old rather than the previous 18.

Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable diseases and yet over 900 cases of cervical cancer were reported in Australia in 2017 so please ensure you’re still tested regularly; don’t allow yourself to become a statistic.

Are children raised in the country healthier than city kids? There are actually pros and cons to both.

It’s a popular belief that the fresh country air and wide-open space is better for kids and its true! Country kids often have more opportunity to be active and are less likely to be exposed to pollution. In addition, their greater exposure to nature has shown to reduce stress levels in rural kids.

However, city kids are generally less likely to use ci******es, alcohol, and illicit drugs than their rural counterparts, according to a study by Deakin University. The same study also stated that city kids were less likely to be affected by asthma, cardiovascular illness, diabetes and obesity.

Yoga, Pilates, meditation, and gluten-free everything; being healthy has never been trendier and many are turning to homeopathic remedies as the fashionable medicinal alternative. But do these remedies actually work?

Scientific studies have shown that homeopathic remedies actually have no more benefit than placebos. Medical experts agree that while there is no harm using homeopathic treatment, in general, using them to treat their health problems in lieu of physician-prescribed medicines is dangerous.

When in doubt ask your physician and always rely on scientific evidence rather than anecdotal ‘proof’.

Turkey, mince pies, gingerbread, and pudding, the festive season is truly a time for delicious decadence. It’s also a time for stacking on a few extra kilos. Here are our four handy tips to keep you from looking like Santa Claus once the celebrations are over.

1. Spread out the love. Limit yourself to certain treats at certain events to find some balance. If you’re going to indulge in some sugary sweets then steer clear of alcohol and vice versa.

2. Think ahead: we all like to spoil ourselves during the holidays, we say yes to excess and no to exercise but try to stay on top of your regular fitness routine. It will make it so much easier to get back in shape once reality hits.

3. Active events: rather than just sitting around all Christmas day plan some physical fun; play in the pool, have a game of cricket. Burn those extra calories as you bond with your family.

4. Slow it down: Chew. Your. Food. It’s not an eating contest so pace yourself. Give yourself a chance to figure out when you’re full or end up feeling like a stuffed turkey.

Did you know that sitting at your desk all day is a dangerous activity?

Sedentary lifestyles where you don’t receive regular physical exercise pose numerous health risks, and according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), one in four people simply aren’t moving enough!

A prolonged sedentary lifestyle has been proven to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, obesity, and cancer. Recent German research even showed that people who spent the most time sitting had a 24% higher risk of developing colon cancer and 21% higher risk of lung cancer.

Another Australian study revealed that men who sat for more than six hours a day are 90% more likely to experience moderate psychological distress than those who sat for just three hours.

Combat these health risks by increasing your everyday physical activity. Trying to hit 10,000 steps a day is a great place to start!

How many people do you know who have had cancer? It's one of the leading causes of illness in Australia but there are ways you can minimise the risk of it happening to you.

Cancer occurs in the body when a cell or group of cells mutate and become faulty, leading them to grow and multiply too quickly and eventually become tumours.

The risk of mutations is increased by exposure to certain agents such as chemicals and radiation. An enormous 1 in 9 cancer cases are a result of smoking whilst 3% are related to alcohol consumption.

By choosing to reduce or eliminate unhealthy habits you’re choosing to put your future first.

Don’t forget your fibre. Not only is fibre essential for your digestive health, studies actually show that a high fibre diet can decrease your risk of bowel cancer, heart disease and diabetes. With that in mind, here are three tricks give your fibre and health a real BOOST:

1. Eat cereals with oats, barley, and wheat. Just look at the back of the box to track down those high-fibre options.

2. Ditch the white stuff! Switch to brown rice and multigrain breads.

3. Veg it up! Adding just one more vegetable to your dinner can work wonders. Broccoli and brussels sprouts are chock-full of fibre but be sure not to overcook them, veggies with more crunch are better for you.
