Mourning š¤ Solidarity š¤ Community
In solidarity with our First Nations People, this Friday Open House is closed.
For the last 5 years OH has stayed open, as a way to make small contributions to Pay The Rent - because sorry isnāt enough.
All passes that were sold on the day and all revenue from classes attended were matched by OHY and the funds given to Indigenous Literacy Foundation. A deep heartfelt thank you to our community. You have been so generous with purchasing passes on Jan 26 the last 5 years. I saw you waiting until the day and buying multiple passes - you absolute legends.
I chose because literacy is a tool to freedom, and keeping culture through stories is resistance. As a Palestinian/Filipina I know this to my core. It never felt right staying open on a day of mourning for the people whoās land I reside, but I rationalised it with fundraising. After a poorly organised referendum, one that preceded truth-telling, a Treaty and was enveloped in so much inflammatory misinformation, OH is changing direction. Itās not business as usual. We will be closed. Instead there will be other opportunities to join in solidarity - a giveaway, a community event and a āPay The Rentā Class.
Iāll be posting more information this week. Be sure to keep a look out!
With love and in solidarity,
Laila
