Making my most controversial comment, and it’s giving me anxiety!
Despite being a cosmetic doctor and skin health enthusiast, I don’t cleanse my face everyday. Of course I wash it with water but I’m not always using cleansers, my skin is totally fine for it and here’s why:
My skin produces sebum, which helps to hydrate, moisturise, protect and lubricate the surface of my skin. I have good bacteria lining the surface of my skin that supports its immune function and the lipid barrier means my skin feels smooth. If I then use an acid based cleanser or any cleanser to strip the surface of the skin, and loosen the skin cells, I’ve disrupted my skin barrier. My skin feels tight, irritated and dry. My skin doesn’t need it. (And it lets me know).
Using products that disrupt your skin barrier can mean skin issues become worse rather than better. Cleaning your skin is important but you need to do it correctly and you don’t always need the harshest product on the market even if you have severe acne.
My ethos is supporting and fixing skin barrier function.
