Childhood.
Do you find it difficult to accept love and kindness from others? Do you feel guilty when someone shows you love or compliments you? Receiving feels like deceiving when you have not been loved properly as a kid.
Our childhood experiences shape the way we view ourselves and the world around us. If we did not receive love, affirmation, and validation from our caregivers during our formative years, it can lead to deep-seated feelings of unworthiness and shame. When we grow up in an environment where love is scarce or conditional, we may develop a belief that we are not deserving of love.
As a result, when someone tries to show us love or kindness in our adult lives, we may feel uncomfortable or even guilty. This is because deep down, we may believe that we are unworthy of love and that there must be an ulterior motive behind the other person’s actions. Receiving love feels like deception because we have internalised the message that we are not deserving of it.
As we heal from our childhood wounds and learn to accept love, we can begin to break the cycle of self-sabotage and self-doubt. By building healthy relationships with ourselves and others, we can create a supportive and loving environment where we feel safe to receive love and kindness.
Remember, it’s ok to receive too.
