This is one of the few photos I have when I started my meditation practice, my daughter was 2ish. She is 10 now. One of the reasons I keep coming back to meditation — even on the chaotic days?
It may actually influence how we age. At a cellular level.
Here’s what the science says:
Our chromosomes have protective caps called telomeres — and they naturally shorten as we get older. Chronic stress speeds that process up.
Shorter telomeres are associated with:

Long-term stress exposure
Systemic inflammation
Faster biological ageing

Here’s where it gets interesting: a growing body of research — including meta-analyses of multiple studies — suggests that regular meditation is linked to better telomere maintenance and higher activity of telomerase, the enzyme that helps protect those caps.
The research is still evolving and results aren’t uniform across all studies. Biology is complex. No single habit is a magic pill.
But here’s what I have lived as both a scientist and a practitioner:
Meditation didn’t just quiet my thoughts.
It changed my breathing.
My reactivity.
How quickly I recover from stress.
And consistently, over time? That changes how the body functions.
Not overnight. But with repetition.
This is exactly why I teach meditation the way I do — simple, sustainable practices that real, busy women can actually stick to.
Because health isn’t built in intensity.
It’s built in consistency. What has meditation got to do with become active? Well everything. But that’s a post for another day.
If you want science-informed, real-life ways to integrate calm into your days, follow along. That’s what I’m here for. 🌿✨

A mum helping other mums

Hi, I am Dr MJ, your go-to health & fitness coach if you are pregnant or have bubs/kids. I have trained many pregnant mums over the years and exercised through both my pregnancies. Putting research into practice, I create opportunities for mums to exercise while keeping kids close by. When I am not training mums, I write & publish information such as the exercise & pregnancy guidelines for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) alongside other researchers.

As a mum of two young children, I have first-hand experience on the challenges we face on a daily basis and I understand how hard it is for us to be active, feel good and lose weight. Over the years, I have come to realise that mums need a different type of approach to health & fitness. An approach that is simple and DOABLE around our crazy busy schedules. I am a big advocate of being active around and with the kids because including the kids on our health & fitness journey helps them to learn how to look after themselves in future and also motivates us as mums to keep on being healthy.

Why do I feel so strongly about helping mums be fit and active in pregnancy & motherhood? Because I know about all the great benefits for you and your family and I just want to share it with as many mums as I can. But on a more personal note, my mum had breast cancer when I was a child and no child should have to watch their mother go through the cancer treatment. I am lucky though, my mum is still around to nag at me and I love it. I am not saying that if you are fit and active, you can avoid all the big scary disease out there and live to 100. But being fit and active can certainly reduce the risk of any diseases so that you can have one less thing to worry about. Being fit & active is as much about reducing your risk of health problems as it is about feeling confidence and happy with your self & your body. So, how do you know you will get excellent care from me? I am an accredited exercise scientist with a PhD in the area of pregnancy & exercise, and over 4 years of experience providing exercise training to pregnant women. I have been in the fitness industry for over 5 years as a Personal Trainer and group fitness leader prior to my PhD. Credentials aside, its simply because I care.
