🧩 Keep Learning: Boost Brain Plasticity

Your brain never stops changing. This ability — neuroplasticity — helps you adapt, learn and grow throughout life.

🧠 To support brain plasticity:

• Learn a new skill or hobby
• Try brain puzzles or memory games
• Take a new route, try a new recipe
• Read, write, stay curious

Every time you challenge your brain, you're building new connections.

And tomorrow — World Brain Day — is the perfect reminder of why that matters.

A quiet motto for a brave woman: 'Take pleasure in the small things.' Sharon’s journey with Motor Neurone Disease is one of strength, grace and support.

In this new lived experience story, we share how Sharon, with the support of our NeuroCare nurse Deb Barndon, a rotating team of carers, and our NeuFriends peer group, has found community and a sense of purpose.

🧠 Boost Your Brain Health by Trying Something New

As highlighted in The Age, Dr. Susanne Roehr, an associate professor at UNSW’s Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing, explains that trying new things is “absolutely beneficial for brain health” at any stage of life. Embracing novelty encourages your brain to build new connections and fosters neuroplasticity—similar to how we build muscles.

Whether it’s picking up a new hobby, learning a language, or trying something creative, challenging yourself with new experiences can improve cognitive function and overall well-being.

At Neurological Council of WA, we believe lifelong learning is key to maintaining brain health. Start something new today and keep your brain active!

Our Story

The Neurological Council of WA (NCWA) was founded in July 1992 at 320 Rokeby Road Subiaco. The Council and several affiliated organisations located there, pooled together resources and knowledge to promote the common and individual goals of their organisations within the neurological sector. The NCWA continues to work with its member organisations to promote mutual needs and interests. The mission of the Neurological Council of WA is;

“To work in partnership with government and non-government organisations to ensure appropriate services are accessible for all people with neurological conditions.”

In July 2002, the NCWA and sixteen affiliated organisations moved into the new, purpose-built Lotteries building complex known as The Niche, housed in the area known as the Centre for Neurological Support (CNS). The NCWA manages the tenancies of the members housed at The Centre for Neurological Support.

The NCWA identified there were many neurological conditions that did not have a specialist organization to offer supports. After securing funding in 1995, the NCWA expanded its services to people with neurological conditions and their carers in the Perth metropolitan area. In 2001, the Community Neurological Nurse service was introduced in some regional areas of WA with this service growing to now cover the Perth Metro, South West, Great Southern and Mid West (this service is now known as Neurocare).
