⚠️ What Are White-Labelled Hearing Aids – And Why You Should Be Cautious

White-labelling is when large retailers sell rebranded hearing aids manufactured by well-known companies under their own name – without disclosing the original brand or model. While this may look like a good deal, it often isn’t.

Here’s why:

🔹 Limited Choice – Clinicians in these chains are incentivised to sell only their exclusive white-label products, not what’s best for you.

🔹 No Brand Transparency – You don’t really know what you’re getting. Same outer shell, but potentially outdated technology inside.

🔹 Locked-In Support – Only the original retailer can program or service your devices. You’re tied to them for future care, even if they close or you move.

🔹 Misleading Comparisons – Technology levels are renamed, making it almost impossible to compare apples with apples across brands.

At Harmony Hearing, we do things differently:
âś… Only the latest name-brand hearing aids
âś… Transparent pricing and technology levels
âś… WA family-owned and operated
✅ Personalised, ethical care – never sales targets

đź’¬ If you're considering hearing aids, know your options. White-labelled devices may cost less upfront, but could cost you more in the long run.

Preventative Measures and Insurance for Hearing Aids

Losing a hearing aid can be both frustrating and costly, but understanding protective measures and insurance options can help safeguard your devices. Here’s a guide on preventing loss and navigating warranty and insurance processes for both Hearing Services Program (HSP) and privately insured clients.

Tips for Preventing Hearing Aid Loss

1.Hearing Aid Accessories: Consult your audiologist about ear grips and other accessories to secure your hearing aids.

2.Regular Maintenance & Routine: Maintain a cleaning routine to keep your aids in good condition and avoid malfunctions that can lead to loss.

3.Trackers and Apps: Utilise technology; many modern hearing aids can connect to smartphones via Bluetooth, featuring “find my device” functions.

4.Awareness: Stay alert in crowded or unfamiliar places to help remember where you placed your hearing aids.

Warranties and Replacements: HSP vs. Privately Insured

In Australia, hearing aids typically come with a standard 3-year warranty, with some manufacturers offering additional insurance for loss or damage.

If you lose or damage a hearing aid, follow these steps:

For a Lost Device:
1. Provide proof of purchase and details of the loss to your insurer.
2. Schedule a new fitting with your audiologist.

For a Damaged Hearing Aid:
1. Present proof of purchase.
2. Obtain a letter from the manufacturer or health practitioner detailing the damage.
3. Arrange a fitting with your audiologist.

For HSP clients, consider the following:

One Claim Per Aid: Only one claim for loss or damage per aid within 12 months. Consult your audiologist for advice on multiple claims.

Statutory Declaration: Complete a declaration detailing the loss.

Residency Requirements: You must be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia.

Proof of Purchase: A receipt or invoice is necessary; if lost, request a copy from your audiology clinic.

By following these preventative measures and understanding your warranty and insurance options, you can reduce the risk of losing your hearing aids and be prepared for unexpected events.

With gaming becoming increasingly popular, there is growing concern about its potential link to hearing loss. New studies from organisations such as The World Health Organisation (WHO), and others highlight this issue.

A significant number of adults aged 18-35 are now spending an average of 17 hours per week gaming, often using headphones with enhanced sound features and THX surround sound for full immersion.

Unfortunately, many users set the volume higher than recommended, which can lead to difficulties like trouble hearing conversations in noisy environments or experiencing tinnitus. This behavior puts them at risk of irreversible hearing damage.

However, the survey shows that most respondents are open to making changes to their habits to mitigate these risks without sacrificing their gaming experience. It's not just gamers who are at risk; anyone using headphones at high volumes or exposed to loud noise for extended periods faces potential harm. Globally, three-quarters of the population listen to audio regularly, with the majority believing their habits are safe. Yet, more than a third of them report some form of hearing impairment, despite fewer than a third believing gaming contributes to hearing issues.

To safeguard your hearing:
- Take frequent breaks.
- Reduce headphone volume by at least 50%.
- Avoid maximum volume settings.
- Monitor your hearing regularly with online tests or consult an audiologist if you notice any issues.

Health, Wellness & Hearing
People are often on the move to get their annual checkups and are always conscientious about their health in some way, shape, or form. However, it is unfortunate to see that it has yet to become common practice to take care of one's hearing health as one would take care of their eyes. People will wear glasses without a second thought but deem hearing aids and hearing accessories unsightly, and as a result, they don’t bother to even have their hearing checked.

It is important to cover all aspects of our health. Even if you think that you may have hearing loss, it may not be permanent. Something as simple as a wax buildup can cause hearing loss, which can be reversed and maintained with regular checkups.

Hearing loss is normal, and there are many options available for those with permanent loss. With technology ever advancing, there are hearing aids to suit your needs and lifestyle. It’s time to include hearing health in the overall health and wellness routine.

Understanding Tinnitus: A Formal Exploration

Tinnitus refers to the perception of sound within the ears without any external stimulus. It manifests as various noises such as ringing, buzzing, roaring, clicking, hissing, or humming. Approximately 15-20% of the population experiences this condition. Left untreated, tinnitus can exacerbate health issues and significantly impact daily life, leading to anxiety, reduced work productivity, and even nausea.

Recent research offers hope for those suffering from tinnitus. Studies conducted at The University of Western Australia suggest that blocking signals from the ear to the brain could potentially alleviate symptoms. Specifically, experiments using the drug furosemide on guinea pigs demonstrated promising results. Furosemide not only reduced the activity of the auditory nerve but also decreased neural hyperactivity in the brain's sound processing area. Guinea pigs treated with furosemide showed no signs of tinnitus post-treatment, indicating its potential efficacy. However, the efficacy of this treatment in humans remains uncertain and requires further investigation.

In the meantime, individuals seeking relief from tinnitus symptoms are encouraged to contact us at Harmony Hearing for support and guidance. While advancements in research bring optimism, the application of findings to human cases necessitates continued study and evaluation.

Do You Feel Stuck In A Noisy Workplace?
In the realm of workplace communication, establishing a positive impression, especially when engaging with superiors, is paramount. However, recent research underscores a concerning disparity between employees and employers in this regard.

A survey conducted among 1,500 employees and nearly 500 benefits professionals focused on assessing perceptions of workplace noise. The findings highlight a significant divergence in how noise levels are perceived by workers compared to employers.

Key insights from the survey include:
- More than 50% of employees reported needing to raise their voices for over an hour daily due to high noise levels in their workplace.
- 36% of respondents indicated dealing with a noisy work environment for at least three hours each day.
- Remarkably, close to 80% of employers believe their workplaces are seldom noisy, showcasing a notable disconnect from the experiences of their employees.

The survey also brought to light concerns regarding potential health implications linked to noisy work environments. Nearly half of the participants expressed worries about the adverse effects on their hearing, despite fewer than a quarter having undergone hearing checks in the past two years.

Additionally, many employees revealed apprehensions about disclosing hearing impairments, fearing repercussions such as employer scrutiny or concerns about being perceived as older if they were to use hearing aids.

Whether you are overdue for a hearing evaluation or are exploring options for improving your hearing, we offer a wide array of solutions designed to meet your needs.

Can Trying to Speak Clearly Make you Sound Angry?

During human communication, nuances often slip through the cracks, leaving room for misinterpretation. One intriguing phenomenon has surfaced through research: The unexpected association between clear speech and negative perceptions.

Imagine you carefully articulate your words, striving for clarity only to find that your efforts are met with misconstrued emotions. This peculiarity has been the subject of a fascinating study shedding light on how we perceive speech.

In this study, 18 young adults with normal hearing listened to sentences spoken by volunteers. These sentences, devoid of any negative connotations, were delivered in two distinct manners: a typical conversational tone and a meticulously enunciated, clear speech style.

Despite the neutrality of the sentences themselves, the listeners consistently rated sentences spoken in clear speech as more negative compared to those uttered in a conversational tone. Also the perception that speakers who exhibited the most disparity between their natural and clear speech were deemed to be angry or unhappy.

So, why does this occur? One suggestion in that when we're angry, we tend to slow down our speech, carefully choosing our words. Could it be that this deliberate pace inadvertently mirrors the cadence of clear speech, leading to the misinterpretation of emotions?

Another possibility lies in our upbringing. Many of us recall moments when stern parental tones accompanied reprimands for misbehavior. Could this association between clear speech and disapproval linger in our subconscious.

It's essential to recognise that this tendency to misconstrue clear speech as negative is more than just a quirk of human psychology. It can pose real challenges in interpersonal communication, particularly for those with hearing loss.

So, what can we do about it? Awareness is the first step. By understanding this phenomenon, we can approach communication with greater empathy and patience. If your loved one accuses you of sounding angry when you're simply trying to speak clearly, share this insight with them. It may pave the way for more harmonious interactions.
