Telehealth under the NDIS offers a flexible, participant-centred way to access supports remotely; via video, phone, or secure messaging. It’s not just a convenience; it’s a lifeline for many participants, especially those in rural areas, with mobility challenges, or navigating complex health needs.
More than just a backup! Telehealth is a legit way to meet your goals from wherever you feel safest. Whether you’re building confidence, routines, or communication skills, or just in a remote area, supports can come to you.
1. EXAMPLES OF WHAT YOU CAN USE TELEHEALTH FOR:
- Psychology and Counselling.
- Speech therapy ( yes, even over Zoom!).
- Exercise physiology.
- Occupational Therapy.
- Support coordination.
- Behaviour support via TelePBS.
“My psychologist sees me weekly through video. It's helped me stay on track without leaving home.” - Participant, WA.
2: WHAT SHOULD BE IN YOUR PLAN?
- Are these supports in your plan under 'Core' or 'Capacity Building'?
- Does telehealth suit your goals and circumstances?
- Have you agreed on this format with your provider?
If you're unsure, ask your support coordinator or LAC to help review.
“Once I knew telehealth was covered, my provider added it to my sessions. No drama, just support.” - Participant, VIC.
3. WHAT GEAR DO YOU NEED?
- A tablet, laptop, or phone.
- A stable internet connection.
- Access to secure platforms ( Zoom, Teams, etc.).
You can ask for 'low-cost AT funding' through your plan. If the tech helps you access supports, it’s considered reasonable.
“My LAC helped me apply for a tablet—now I never miss a therapy session.” - Participant, VIC.
4. MAKE IT YOURS
- Choose a quiet, familiar comfy spot.
- Let providers know what works: breaks, visuals, camera on or off.
- Headphones or captions can help with focus and understanding.
“Being home helps me stay regulated. I speak more, and I don’t feel like I have to perform.” - Participant, TAS.
5. KEEP TRACK after each session. Note:
- What did you work on?
- How did you feel?
- What helped or didn’t?
It helps tailor your support and keeps your goals front and centre.
“My journal keeps things honest. Even the rough days show progress.” - Participant, WA.
If telehealth sounds helpful, start the convo.
Ask your provider, support coordinator or LAC about updating your goals or adding supports.
This is about your comfort, autonomy, and progress on your terms.
