I’ve been supporting people with nervous system regulation for years now. It’s great to see that the general population is starting to catch up.

Contrary to outdated expectations, we don’t regulate our emotions. We regulate our nervous system and automatically the emotions aren’t so big!

It’s not magic. It’s science.

What works for every individual to encourage regulation is unique. It’s trial and error to work it out. What you need is lots options to try and the energy or support to try them.

This graphic gives a few god easy ideas to begin. If you want to know more, or need some encouragement or body doubling to find what works for you, drop me a PM. I’m happy to help.

Are you neurodivergent and have a job???

Have your skills, capacities and gifts been recognised and utilised in your employment?

Or have you been labelled as ‘not fitting in’, ‘unable to meet expectations or deadlines’ or something else just as diminishing???

My neurodivergence has gotten in the way of almost every job I’ve had.

I’ve been called “weird” and blamed for creeping people out.

My extra energy has meant I’ve usually been assigned the most difficult and tiring workloads with no extra appreciation, just increased expectations.

I’ve been forced to have lunch with colleagues in the lunch roo m in my own time in order to ‘build a team mindset’ despite desperately needing to have some time alone to recharge my batteries and breathe some fresh air ☀️

My flavour of honedty wasnt appreciated even was requested and i was psychological unsafe in the workplace as a result

So I became self employed 💡

Great (though challenging) result for me.
Huge loss for workplaces that could have harnessed my unique abilities to their own advantage.

Now I’m passionate about supporting individuals and workplaces to do better.

I can advocate for your accommodations in the workplace so that you can feel safer, more supported and more competent 💪

The flow on affect for your employer is that you will be more productive. You wil require less reactive time out. You will have less sick days. You will be more reliable. You wil feel valued and be less likely to jump ship to another employer = less $ spent hiring and training new staff.

Burn out reduces.
People then want to be at work.
Workplace culture improves.
Everyone goes home happier to their families and friends 👩‍❤️‍👩

Workplaces, when you are ready to do better I can help you to create an inclusive culture, where everyone’s gifts have a place to contribute 💼

Get in touch.
It’s a win/win all round 🙌

I have a disability – Can I access counselling with you?

Yes!

My counselling service is focussed on inclusion and has access supports to meet almost everyone’s needs. There are no steps, and the counsekkibg space is wheelchair accessible.

A range of sensory supports are available within the counselling room such as fidgets, weighted blanket, eye mask, soft toys, a cushion corner, and a wobbly seat cushion.

You are encouraged to do whatever will make you feel most comfortable whether than be attending in your pyjamas, sitting on the floor, or bringing your own comfort items.

If there is something you may require for accessibility, please let me know.

Can you hack your brain to enhance mood, happiness etc? YES!

Is it easy? NO!

Every brain uses the same chemicals, but I’m totally different ways.
That’s why there’s no ‘recipe’ that works for everyone.

Counselling isn’t just for venting it isnt just for a time of crisis.

It’s the opportunity to get to know yourself better with the assistance of someone who’s objective to your circumstances while caring about who you are.

It’s having someone be a tour guide who is familiar with the local pit falls so you can explore who you are safely.

It’s having someone who’s visited all the awesome hot spots that can direct you to the ones you might like best.

It’s the chance to invest in yourself the same way you invest in your partner, kids and job.

It’s an investment that will pay dividends forever.

What is ‘masking’???
Masking is a coping strategy that people use to hide who they really are to keep themselves psychologically safe when their nervous system perceives that they aren’t safe.

Do only neurodivergence (ND) people do it???
No. Anyone can do it. But ND people do it more commonly because they sense danger more acutely than neurotypical people their nervous systems are more primed. Those with trauma will do it a lot too.

Why is it bad???
It isn’t. If it helps keep the person feeling safe, it’s a positive coping strategy.

So why do we want people to stop masking???
We don’t want people to stop masking if they need to.
We want people to not feel that they need to mask!!! We want all people to feel safe in the work - safe to be themselves, express themselves, and be valued for who they are.

How do we do this???
This is a bigger conversation but the short answer is to be open and respectful of each person’s self expression whether you know if they have any diagnosis or not.
If you feel uncomfortable around someone’s quirks, if you struggle to communicate efficiently with someone, if you find yourself making internal judgement (hello “shoulds”), then ask yourself what’s going on for you, rather than expecting the other person to change for your comfort or ease.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a widely used modality in therapy. And apparently highly effective. This was decided from an enormous amount of research, funded by those who teach CBT.

Don’t be fooled into wasting your time and money.

I’ve never liked it.
Not from when we first started learning it in uni.

Why?
Because it talks about emotions but actually avoids feeling them. While we are talking about feelings we can pretend we are doing the ‘work’ but really we are using logic to avoid feeling the feelings.
It keeps us ‘safe’.
But this kind of false safety is not where we grow.

We are not minds cut off at the neck from our bodies and hearts.

To grow we need to create safety. This safety comes from feeling our feelings in an environment of non judgement with people who can be in the company of our feelings and stay present , AND we discover that the feelings do pass.

They don’t take us over. We aren’t annihilated by them!

Each time we do this we get stronger. We get more comfortable in feeling the feelings. We are less scared of them. It gets easier to face emotions. And then we feel truly safe - in our body, in our mind, in the world.

In my opinion this is what real counselling is. Taking about your feelings isn’t the best use of your time or resources. It won’t lead to profound change.

So this graphic needs a fifth step: feel the emotions, experience what it’s like to have big feelings and for them to pass.

If this sounds like you’re kind of therapy, get in touch. I’m excited to be the person to provide the right environment and space for this for you.

When your child invites you into their world, jump at the chance!!!

Katy Perry on Monday night was amazing! What was more amazing was my hyper-independent daughter, who at 13 is neck deep in being separate, wanted us to have matching outfits, hair, do make up together; to go out to dinner first, and even sing together.

It is easy to assume it’s all about the shopping and things. Really it is an enormous invitation to connect intimately, to have a relationship.

As children get older they are more subtle with their cues to connect. Or they may mis-cue entirely, giving confusing signals.

The pretend tea when they are 3yo, the sitting too close when they are 9yo, and the just sitting aroubd you for longer than seems reasonable are all bids to connect.

My advice is to RSVP ASAP!
The more we do, the safer they feel and the more their cues to connect will become easier to read.

After a good couple of years, some major health issues, my children having trauma, turning 50, relationship changes, and life changes in back from my social media break!

I’ve been still quietly working away with client’s but I’m now once again feeling like I have important things to say and contribute to our world so I’m again using this platform.

I will be posting more information and insights that is neuroaffirming, life affirming and potentially challenging.

I’m updating my website to reflect some new directions so hold on to your hat for that!

Overall I’m feeling ready and happy to be back. I know I can add value, which is always what makes me happiest.

What makes you happiest???

Kids need leadership.
Leadership that is wise and strong and kind. Without it they feel like they are expected to pilot the plane!
They might say they want to pilot the plane. They might have bravado about being big enough to pretend they can. But they really want the pilot to pilot the plane.

This is what I do in my work.
I help parents to learn how to be confident pilots and give kids the trust in their pilot to leave the cockpit and be a kid.
