How can a physio help treat my concussion?

One of the most common ongoing issues following a concussion is dizziness and balance problems. This can be due to problems with the balance centres of the brain (vestibular system), your visual system , and/or problems with the muscle and joint sensors of your neck.

A physiotherapist can assess where your functional deficit is coming from and prescribe rehabilitation exercises to get you on the path to recovery.

Head to the website to book an appointment with our concussion specialist if you are experiencing ongoing issues after a head knock.

What can a physiotherapist do to treat my concussion??

If dizziness, neck discomfort, or headaches continue to be a problem after your concussion, our physiotherapists can suggest incorporating cervico-vestibular rehabilitation into your management regimen, along with manual neck therapy.

Recent research points towards a significant interconnection between both the cervical spine and the vestibular system, and the integral part they play in the persistence of symptoms.

By addressing cervical spine dysfunctions, as part of an integrated approach with other management strategies, a physiotherapist can potentially alleviate symptoms, improve mobility and enhance recovery.

What can a physio do to treat my concussion??

Physios and other Health Care Professionals who have completed comprehensive training in concussion management can offer guidance with diet and nutrition that focuses on reducing inflammation and repairing the gut.

They can also suggest improvements to sleep hygiene to encourage restorative sleep and promote the body’s natural circadian rhythm, which is often affected after a concussion.

These simple adjustments may help to lessen symptoms, reduce fatigue, regulate hormones and balance a persisting inflammatory response.

Concussion management may seem complex, but there are many subtle changes you can make in your daily life that will encourage recovery 😊
