Anatomically, some frequently used acupuncture points are located in areas where the skin is more sensitive or there are more nerve endings. While acupuncture is generally a relaxing and mostly painless experience, you may occasionally notice that certain points feel extra sensitive.
From a Chinese medicine perspective, this is not only normal. it is often viewed as a good sign.
This sensation is referred to as “De Qi” (pronounced duh chee), and it describes the feeling that arises when the needle makes contact with the body’s Qi. It can present as tingling, warmth or a gentle pulsing.
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), this indicates that an energetic blockage or stagnation is being activated and shifted, allowing Qi to resume its natural flow.
So next time you’re on the treatment table, notice if any points feel more sensitive—then tune into how you feel afterward. You might find that those “spicy” spots are the ones that bring the most relief.
