Congratulations Liam!

Patient Milestone ✨

At the age of 17, Liam Shepherd's life changed forever when a horrific car accident left him with a C6 spinal cord injury and confinement to a wheelchair.

Today, we're celebrating his move to independent living! The SOLD sign is up on his new house, marking an incredible, long-term goal for this determined and capable young man.

Following a tough start to his recovery, Liam was offered the chance to participate in the Remplir™ clinical trial, undergoing nerve transfer therapy with leading surgeon Dr Alex O'Beirne and dedicated rehabilitation with OT Jaslyn Cullen. Since his surgery, Liam has reclaimed abilities he once thought impossible – including driving a modified car.

At Orthocell, these are the stories that fuel our mission. Liam's journey from hospital bed to homeowner reminds us that with the right treatment, support and mindset, new chapters can begin – even after life-changing injuries.

Congratulations on your new home, Liam. Your journey continues to inspire us all.

I have two of my inspiring patient’s stories to share. I will share one at a time and hopefully you can spare a few minutes each time to watch them. The research and work we do is life changing. Having you watch these and increase awareness of these options may change someone else’s life.

Firstly, introducing Jasmine. Thank you for sharing your story with the goal of raising awareness and helping others.

What is a hand therapy practitioner? We are qualified Occupational therapists and Physiotherapists.

We have undertaken advanced postgraduate upper-limb education and training and are recognised as experts in hand and upper-limb rehabilitation.

We work in public hospitals and private practices in cities and regional and rural towns across Australia.

Surgeons, GPs, physiotherapists and other health professionals refer to us because we provide expert assessment, diagnosis and treatment, reducing recovery time and improving patient outcomes.

We see patients of all ages. We treat trauma, injuries, and conditions affecting joints, tendons, muscles, and nerves, including ligament sprains, inflamed tendons, broken bones, and damaged nerves. We also treat pain and arthritis and manage post-operative wounds, scars, and swelling.

We specialise in custom-made thermoplastic orthoses (or splints) to rest and protect an injury in the long and short term. These may be small splints for the finger or thumb or larger for the wrist or arm.

We prescribe rehabilitation exercises that improve range of motion, strength and function.

We care for our patients and use evidence-based practice to ensure they get the best outcomes so they can return to work, recreation, and life.

We are members of the Australian Hand Therapy Association and embrace lifelong learning.
