Christian was born with Microtia Atresia, a birth congenital defect affecting his right ear. Microtia is a condition characterised by an incomplete or underdeveloped ear. It literally comes from the words “micro” (small) and “otia” (ear). Aural Atresia is the absence of an external ear canal. Usually patients are also lacking a middle ear space and eardrum. ed ear bones. It is common for the inner ear and auditory nerve to be normal. Atresia is classified as a conductive hearing loss because there is a problem conducting sound from the external ear to the inner ear (because there is no canal for the sound to travel through).

General information

Christian requires surgery to reconstruct his right ear and ear canal so he may have the gift of normal hearing that we take for granted. Late January, 2008, Dr. Reinisch, Dr. Lewin, and Dr. Roberson (assisted by Drs. Colen) combined to perform the world's first procedure where atresia repair and medpor auricular reconstruction were combined into a single surgical procedure. The early results from this combined procedure, which took approximately seven hours to complete, appear to be as good if not better than performing it in the traditional two, or occasionally three procedures. This combined procedure was performed on a 3 year old boy with bilateral microtia and atresia, adopted from China by a family living in Sacramento, California. Since that first case, all 18 subsequent cases have been successfully completed. Drs. Reinisch and Roberson plan on offering this combined atresia repair and medpor auricular reconstruction procedure once per month at the Waverley Surgery Center in Palo Alto California.
