November is Diabetes Action Month and Specsavers is proud to stand with Diabetes NZ to raise awareness of diabetes in young people.

This year’s campaign is all about supporting tamariki and rangatahi because young people can get diabetes which makes them more likely to experience sight-threatening eye conditions like diabetic retinopathy.

Know the signs. Share the message. Get tested. And join the movement - literally - by pledging your minutes to One Million Minutes of activity here - https://one-million-minutes.raiselysite.com/

Let’s take action together.

To celebrate World Sight Day, Specsavers joined forces with Eye Health Aotearoa to provide free eye screenings at New Zealand Parliament. Our team screened 164 staff members and MPs, helping raise awareness of the importance of regular eye checks.
Optometrist Hong from Specsavers Lower Hutt led the screenings, including with MP Carlos Cheung MP for Mt Roskill and MP Rima Nakhle. The day concluded with a networking evening hosted by MPs Sam Uffindell MP and Dr Ayesha Verrall, who shared their personal journeys with eye health.

We’re proud to stand alongside our partners and Parliamentarians in advocating for accessible eye care for all New Zealanders.

Glaucoma is often nicknamed ‘the silent thief of sight’ because it is a progressive eye condition that many don’t realise they have before it is too late. At Specsavers when you have a routine eye test, the optometrist checks your eye health through a number of tests and can detect early signs of glaucoma. The earlier it’s found, the more time you have to protect your sight. One of our patients Estelle explains what life is like with glaucoma in this video.

March is National Glaucoma Awareness Month. Across NZ, our optometrists detect early signs of sight-threatening glaucoma every day in routine eye tests. Those patients are referred on to a specialist for a diagnosis and then are able to access support and treatment to protect their sight. One such patient is John, who explains what life with glaucoma is like for him in this video.

☕ If you ask John what glaucoma looks like, he’d probably tell you it looks like a chipped cup, a bumped shoulder, or a streaky plate he swore was clean. 🍽️

🤷 It looks like years of thinking, my eyesight’s fine—why go to the optometrist? 👓

😨 And it looks like the shock of being told, out of nowhere, you have glaucoma—a shock so big, he fainted.
