The Alfred Foundation is excited to announce the partnership between the Victorian Adult Burns Service (VABS) at The Alfred and the Fire Fighters Charity Fund (FFCF).
Helping to advance the care of patients with complex major burns injuries, The Alfred’s Skin Bioengineering Lab has developed a method to grow skin from a patient’s own cells.
FFCF board member Andy Morton said being able to support projects such as this was one of the central tenets to the Fund’s aims, giving all firefighters who contribute to the fund some real ‘skin in the game’ when it comes to supporting this life changing development.
The grateful laboratory team, led by A/Prof Shiva Akbarzadeh, assembled to share a tour and celebratory afternoon tea with the FFCF committee last month.

The Alfred Foundation enjoyed helping The Alfred ICU team celebrate their 60th anniversary in June.
Realising that many of the clinical staff were unable to be part of formal celebrations,
Foundation team members were pleased to take the cake up to the ICU staff tearoom, where they were met by an appreciative night shift.
Happy anniversary and thank you for all your incredible work ICU Team!

We recently welcomed Norman Wellington back, to show his carers and family the wonderful support the family was afforded at the Stroke Unit at The Alfred.
Professor Geoffrey Cloud, Director of Stroke Services at The Alfred, said they had "deep gratitude" for the transformational gift that Norman has made to the unit, inspired by the outstanding care received by Norman’s late mother Lisla.
This week is also National Stroke Week, which is a good time to raise awareness of the F.A.S.T. (face, arms, speech and time) signs of stroke.
Know the signs, and you could save a life.

New hope is on the horizon for silicosis sufferers with Melbourne experts set to embark on a world-first trial aiming to halt progression of the deadly lung disease.
The trial, which is in its early stages, has been made possible by a three-year funding commitment from Zaparas Lawyers

There's only one week to go for our amazing Dry July participants, who are supporting Alfred Cancer!
The annual campaign raises funds for The Alfred Foundation to support programs for our patients, their families and carers.
More than $13,000 has been raised so far, but every dollar helps, going towards an energy pod for The Alfred - a comfy, calming spot for cancer patients and carers to recharge.

Thank you and a massive congratulations to all of our Run Melbourne participants on Sunday!
The rain held off and we loved seeing so many of our great supporters drop by our marquee.
With more than 300 runners representing Team Alfred, more than $32,000 has been raised! What a great effort!

Only five sleeps to go until Run Melbourne!
Good luck to the more than 300 runners who have signed up to support Team Alfred on Sunday across the various distances.
Two of those who have been inspired to take part - becoming Team Alfred Charity Superstar fundraisers in the process - are Kiera and Rhys.
Kiera was admitted to The Alfred with multi-organ failure in 2023 and has gone from spending six weeks in the ICU fighting for her life, to running a half-marathon to raise money for the hospital and staff who saved her.
For Rhys, who is a past patient of The Alfred, it is now "my turn to give back".
