"I should just eat less and exercise more to lose weight...but I'm too tired to exercise"

Woman said that to me the other day.

When I was burnout out years ago - I was exactly like this. I would FORCE myself to exercise..mainly because I was worried if I didn't I would just gain more weight.

Then I would need another coffee, biscuit and afternoon chocolate to keep me going.

If this is you, then your plan may be to 'EAT LESS & EXERCISE MORE' but this won't cut it.

WHAT TO DO
==========

Firstly, the important thing to realise is that the reason we gain weight is because our hormones deposit fat into our cells.

It's NOT just a case of overeating or not doing enough exercise.

It's a hormonal situation where the body is using specific hormones to shift excess food and storing it into our body fat, instead of oxidising it.

There are three key hormones that look after this.

1. CORTISOL

This is our stress hormone. If you've been too busy, stressed, overwhelmed or anxious and feel tired all the time, then cortisol is our stress hormone which tells our body to do a lot of different things to help us with stress, but one of the things that is does for our metabolism, is that it tells our body to not burn body fat for fuel, but to start breaking down muscle.

So it's a real catabolic hormone, it burns muscle and stores fat.

2. INSULIN

Insulin moves sugar/glucose from our bloodstream into our cells for energy.

Now if we've been having lots of sugars, lots of high-glycemic carbohydrates or refined grains, we are going to have insulin insensitivity which means our body will store excess food as fat.

Insulin resistance is proving to be the biggest culprit on why we get fat - NOT BECAUSE WE EAT TOO MUCH (using caps to emphasise this point, i'm not yelling)

The third system is our

3. THYROID

Our thyroid gland is the queen of our metabolism and quite often our thyroid is affected due to stress, poor gut health, excess sugars, inflammation, toxicity and so on.

Our thyroid regulates our metabolic burn rate, how our body burns excess calories.

Obviously we want our burn rate to be high not only for weight management but to also produce energy.

DON'T JUST EAT LESS & EXERCISE MORE

These three key hormones, when out of balance, will cause our body to store excess calories as fat.

It's not just a case of, you've eaten too much over Christmas and now you're going to have to exercise more and eat less.

That's probably your strategy, you may be thinking "I'll just cut down on food and exercise a lot more."

It won't make a difference until you balance these hormones through diet and lifestyle medicine.

How Women In Business Boost Their Immunity, Prevent Infections & The Dreaded Launch-Flu ๐Ÿคง

Put down the hand sanitiser for a moment....

Firstly, I'm so impressed by how people have transformed their business, virtually overnight.

It's creativity and true entrepreneurship! What a moment to shine, amongst the chaos.

The more pressure we face in business, the more likely we are to cut corners, and those corners tend to be self-care.

When in fact, it's the most important time to do the opposite.

To have a plan in place to support your immunity so you don't get sick and need a lot of time off.

But to also support mental clarity and energy.

Anxiety and overwhelm are an obstacle to high-performance.

Long-term anxiety can affect mood down the road and is linked to depression.

So what can a super busy woman in business do.....

Two very simple things right now:

โžŠ Vitamin D:

Don't pop a pill.
Vitamin D deficiency = sun exposure deficiency.

We get MUCH more than just vitamin D from the sun. For example:

It releases nitric oxide and melatonin, which lowers blood pressure, insulin resistance (belly fat) and provides antioxidants.

It resets our circadian rhythm for better sleep, less anxiety & mood disorders.

It supports immunity to reduce infections and balance auto-immunity.

In the depression era, sun exposure was pivotal to reducing rickets and was a core treatment of tuberculosis.

โœ… Safe sun exposure: 20mins of sun exposure on the face, arms (and legs if possible) daily, without SPF.

You can do this even while working outside on your laptop. I'm in Melbourne where we have less sun and I go out every morning on my balcony to get my daily dose.

โž‹ Vitamin C:

Great to boost immunity and reduce inflammation!

There is an abundance of clinical research to show Vitamin C's anti-viral effects when used in quantities around 3,000mg, daily in divided doses.

Vitamin C is also great for the adrenal glands. One of the biggest problems I see with women in business is adrenal fatigue.

Where chronic stress has led to exhaustion, anxiety, low moods, weight gain, and brain fog.

These symptoms are not normal and are related to our hormones.

Excessive amounts of stress hormones over a long period of time disrupt our entire system.

I see it in my work with professional women every single day.

And why are these women more prone to it?

Because they are entirely TOO capable!

They work hard to build a successful business, career AND often juggle family commitments.

They take on too much. They are over-scheduled. Lack boundaries. High-achievers who eventually have to cut some corners...

They are amazing at what they do โ€“ but they have accidentally sacrificed themselves in the process.

Lena Dunham posted this recently about her struggle with anxiety and depression and the benefits of exercise.

"It's mad annoying when people tell you to exercise, and it took me about 16 medicated years to listen. Glad I did."

When anxiety hits, we get a surge of stress hormones.

These hormones are designed to get us moving - fight or flight baby!๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ

When we do, our hormones subside and we're back to calm.

But.. often we sit at our desks continuing to work.

Our bodies need to offload the build-up of stress hormones because they send us into overdrive.

Causing further anxiety, overwhelm, and mood changes.

(....and the anxiety about anxiety mental loop!)

Even just getting out during the day for a walk. Studies have shown a 20-30min walk most days will reduce anxiety and depression.

There are many great strategies to 'manage' anxiety.

But there are also ways to stop the anxiety altogether so we can free up our day without being exhausted trying to 'manage' our state of mind and the after-effects of stress hormones.

We all have those days where our thoughts have spun out of control, but for some, this is everyday life.

Most assume it's because of the million and one things we have to do or worry about - work, kids, partner, finances etc.

But constant anxiety & worry may have nothing to do with the above, and more to do with internal imbalances in our body.

Science has found that 90 secs - 3mins of stressful thinking activates the stress response and creates a measurable biochemical imbalance in the brain.
(As measured by PET scans & fMRI)

Over time, these stress hormones have a kick-on effect on other hormones in the body, making anxiety, worry & low moods a permanent state.

Then....

๐Ÿ˜• We can't handle stress like we used to

๐Ÿ˜• We stress and ruminate over everything and nothing, or get anxious because we're anxious

๐Ÿ˜• We panic about 'problems' that won't even matter in 6 months time.

๐Ÿ˜• We no longer feel excited about life, instead, we feel nothing at all

๐Ÿ˜• We overthink every scenario until we're mentally & emotionally exhausted


When stress hormones are activated all the time (I have women tell me they are stressed 8, 12, 14 hours a day) then we cannot control our reactions.

Even if we 'shrink' our life so that we can cope i.e working part-time, not going for that promotion, staying in instead of socialising....doing less.

It won't solve the problem.

I know we don't want to play small. We all want to live BIG and really live the one life we've been given.

We need to correct the internal imbalances to get our life back.

For example:

Mineral deficiencies can disrupt our mood due to the impact on 'serotonin' - the happy (for no reason) hormone ๐Ÿ˜‰

Deficiency in magnesium is implicated in serotonin deficiency.

Vitamins B6 is a co-factor for serotonin and is often deficient in those in high stress. Also Zn, Iron, Folic acid & B12 play a part here too.

I know what it's like to be restricted by constant anxiety and it's no way to live, let alone show up to work each day, raise a family, run a business or be in the world.

There are many ways to feel calm, happy and on top of things...without running away from our lives...
