Every day is a good day to ask, "R U OK?" 💛

This Thursday 11 September is R U OK? Day, but at Ross Care, we know that for people living with disability, life’s ups and downs can feel even more complex.

💬 Asking "Are you OK?" can make a big difference.
🔎 Research shows it boosts wellbeing and helps people feel supported.
💡 But we also know that some people, especially in the disability community, can feel overlooked, isolated, or unsure how to open up.

That’s why we encourage everyone to feel confident starting those conversations. You don’t need to have all the answers, just being there matters.

Let’s make sure everyone feels seen, heard, empowered and supported, every day. 💛

Meal planning combines nutrition knowledge, budgeting skills and organisation. For many people in our SIL homes, Sunday afternoon becomes meal planning time, looking at the week ahead and deciding what to cook. This practical activity builds multiple skills while ensuring a varied and healthy diet. Simple tools like visual recipe cards and shopping lists make the process manageable and enjoyable.

Navigating public transport can be challenging for many people with disability, but with practice and the right support, it becomes an important tool for independence. Our community access team works alongside people to learn routes, manage unexpected changes and build confidence using buses, trains and trams across Adelaide. This skill opens doors to employment, education and social connection.

Creating a morning routine that works takes time and consistency. Visual guides showing each step from waking up to leaving the house can be incredibly helpful, especially for people who process information visually. Our support workers help develop these practical tools, adapting them as skills develop and confidence grows. What morning routine strategies have worked well in your household?

The transition from family home to supported accommodation involves significant adjustment for everyone. Visiting potential homes multiple times, bringing meaningful personal items, and maintaining important routines during the transition all help make this change smoother. Equally important is understanding that adjustment takes time and celebrating small wins along the way. Planning regular family visits in the early weeks provides reassurance and connection.

Technology can be a game-changer for independence. From medication reminder apps to visual scheduling tools, the right tech solutions make daily tasks more manageable. Recently, several clients have found success using smart home devices to set reminders, play favourite music and control lighting. Our support workers help identify useful technologies and provide training to use them effectively.
