Say it with us: rest is NECESSARY, not a reward 👏

Ever heard of the 42% rest rule?

Science tells us that 42 is the percentage of time your body and brain need you to spend resting. It's about 10 hours out of every 24. It doesn't have to be every day; it can average out over a week or a month or more. But, basically, if you're getting your much needed 8 hours of sleep a night, that means you should be spending at least an extra 2 hours per day resting. The remaining 14 hours can be dedicated to work, exercise, socialising, family and other commitments.

If that sounds unachievable, consider all that you risk by NOT resting, including health issues from an increased risk of hypertension, to diabetes, obesity, depression, heart attack, stroke and more. Not to mention the impact that burnout and a lack of rest can have on our work, social and personal lives and more.

So never feel guilty for making time for rest, your life literally depends on it.

The work of healing is anything but linear 📈

Rather than a step-by-step process, like climbing a ladder to a singular destination, we can think of healing as more of a spiral. One that twists and turns in ways we don't always expect 🌀

Carl Jung once said that “Psychologically you develop in a spiral; you always come over the same point where you have been before, but it is never exactly the same – it is either above or below.”

Healing is like this, too. There may be times in your journey when you feel you're back where you started. But it's important to look at the bigger picture and the new tools, perspectives and lessons you may uncover each time you feel you're moving backwards. Healing is not a task we can tick off our to-do lists and get out of the way. It's a practice we must continuously choose to follow, even in the face of setbacks.

Know that it is okay if your healing journey doesn't look like a straight, upward line to success. Whatever your journey looks like, the most important thing is that you're still on it 💚
