Electrolytes refer to essential minerals that are dissolved in a fluid to form positive or negative metabolic ions (stored and excreted through blood, sweat and urine).
These include sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, magnesium, phosphate, and bicarbonate. Each serves different purposes in a variety of bodily processes. In particular they are essential for proper nerve function, healthy muscular function, maintaining blood pH balance, and supporting hydration.
You are able to absorb most electrolytes through diet; however, a drop in essential electrolytes can occur after excessive sweating (exercise, weather, temperature), vomiting, or diarrhea. Symptoms of extreme deficits include fatigue, arrhythmia, confusion, muscle cramping, headaches, etc.
If you are exercising a lot and/or in warmer environments, it is beneficial (and at times essential) to replenish your electrolyte levels. Electrolytes can be purchased in various forms including powders, dissolvable tablets, drinks, and tablets. However, an excess of electrolytes can have negative effects so it is important to avoid taking electrolyte supplements unless you need them.
