Support should never be “one size fits all.”

Every person has their own goals, preferences, and strengths. Person-centred support is about recognising this and ensuring individuals are involved in decisions about the support they receive.

By focusing on what matters most to the person, support can help build independence, confidence, and meaningful connections within the community.

At Rae of Sunshine Supports, we believe the best outcomes happen when support is guided by the individual’s voice, choices, and goals.

Not all ramps are created equal – is yours safe?

Not all ramps are safe — and the difference can mean independence or injury.

A safe gradient refers to how steep a ramp is. In Australia, accessibility standards (such as those outlined in the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the National Construction Code) generally recommend a maximum gradient of 1:14 for longer ramps — meaning for every 1 metre of height, there should be at least 14 metres of ramp length.

Why does this matter?
🔹 Steep ramps increase fall risk for people using mobility aids
🔹 Wheelchair users may not be able to independently propel up a steep slope
🔹 People with walkers, prams, or balance challenges are at higher risk
🔹 Carers may struggle to safely assist someone

Accessibility isn’t just about having a ramp — it’s about having one that’s safe and usable.

👀 How to spot a potentially unsafe ramp:

✔️ Does it look unusually steep?
✔️ Is there a handrail on both sides?
✔️ Is there a flat landing area at the top and bottom?
✔️ Does it feel difficult or unsafe to use?

Safe design supports independence, dignity, and inclusion.

At Rae of Sunshine Supports, we believe true accessibility empowers everyone to participate confidently in the community.
👉 Next time you see a ramp, check its slope and share this post to spread awareness on safe accessibility!

💜 Today we celebrate the incredible women who lead, support, and uplift our communities.

On International Women’s Day, we recognise the strength, compassion, and resilience of women everywhere — from those advocating for inclusion, to those supporting others every single day.

At Rae of Sunshine Supports, we’re proud to work alongside inspiring women who make a meaningful difference in the lives of others and in our community.

Let’s take a moment to celebrate, respect, and stand in solidarity with women across the world.

👀 Face me when you speak

It might seem small, but it makes a huge difference for people who are Deaf or have hearing loss.

Being able to see someone’s face helps with:
- Understanding words through lip-reading
- Picking up facial expressions and body language
- Feeling included and respected in conversations

💡 Tips for inclusive communication:
• Face the person when speaking
• Speak clearly and at a natural pace
• Reduce background noise
• Keep your mouth visible

Small changes can create big impacts in accessibility and inclusion.

👉 Save or share this post to help spread awareness and make communication more accessible for everyone.
