There’s a conversation that comes up in yoga circles from time to time about whether it’s okay to come to yoga just for the workout. It’s typically discussed with a great deal of judgement, and people tend to walk away confused as to what yoga actually is…
Here’s what I believe: yoga asana invites you into mindfulness. But that invitation tends to come once you’ve moved past the basics. Once you’re no longer thinking about where your feet go, and you can simply flow. That’s when something shifts. That’s when yoga starts to do its deeper work.
But it has to start somewhere.
If a student comes to me wanting a workout, I think that’s wonderful. They did yoga. If a student spends an entire class resting in balasana, I think that’s equally wonderful. They did yoga, too. We can move and breathe and be still in whatever way our bodies and minds need on any given day, and none of it is wrong. As long as everyone in the room is respecting the practice, I’m just happy to be in the presence of yoga (in a beautiful environment).
There is no room at East Hall Yoga for judgement, perfectionism, or a holier-than-thou attitude. What there is room for is growth, support, and genuine joy.
Yoga is good for you. In whatever form it takes, at whatever pace, for whatever reason you showed up. Come for the exercise. Stay for the spirituality. Either way, you are learning something new, and you are welcome here.
