At last year's state election, we NSW Labor candidates were invited to suggest grant opportunities for community groups and projects in our electorates. I was very careful to suggest those who had mentioned a need - and who met the grant criteria.
I committed to a number of community groups across Ryde, Hunters Hill and Lane cove LGA's. One of them was an organisation who in addition to other community services, quietly deliver emergency food staples to our most vulnerable... Sydney Community Services.
Our Lane cove campaign committed to providing help to deliver many more food parcels. The Local Small Commitments Allocation Program is a $37.2 million grants program established by the NSW Government, providing grants to the value of $400,000 to each of the 93 NSW electorates.
When I was first elected to council in 2017, a man called me to say he was hungry. He had kept my flyer from his mailbox pinned to his fridge (after the election in the East Ward of Ryde - Gladesville) and later called to say he needed help. A former public school teacher who had fallen on hard times and was living in social housing.
I called around the local services... until someone suggested I call Sydney community services in Gladesville rd, Hunters hill.
They followed protocol, checked his situation and were able to supply the man with an emergency food package, then ongoing advice and help for him to organise his food deliveries.
So it was wonderful to catch up with the CEO, Branka Ivkovic, from Sydney community services recently, to show me how the grant is being spent and hear about all the other services they provide.
Keeping our elderly and most vulnerable out and about in an effort to avoid isolation; home modification services (which the City of Ryde no longer provide and refer Ryde residents to them); Transport; outings; Linen services for those who can't wash or change beds...and much, much more.
They have a hub near Ryde at Gladesville rd community centre and the amazing space at Lane Cove. Their services and space are funded by Federal, State and local government but they also raise funds through the beautifully written and produced https://thevillageobserver.com.au/ What a breath of fresh air the magazine style monthly paper is - focusing on community events and opportunities for connection...make sure you pick it up from Harris Farm Markets; Cox's Road Mall and other collection points across the North shore.
