About lomilomi

Lomilomi is a deeply restorative, relaxing and nourishing massage. A session typically takes around 1.5 hours. The long flowing and rhythmical strokes can create a hypnotic effect which bring the mind into a place of stillness and presence. Treatment can be given with as much or as little pressure over the whole body as required. It works on the circulatory, lymphatic, muscular, nervous, digestive and respiratory systems of the body. The word lomi means to “shift’, “move”, “knead”, “soothe”, and in connection with this meaning, another way to understand lomilomi is that on an energetic level it can release energy blocks in the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual body, shifting, moving and guiding it to heal and realign itself towards greater balance and harmony.

The technique and sequence I use, working with the hands only (differing from other forms which use forearms and dance like movements), comes from the lineage passed on to my teacher, Dawn Charlton, from Hawaiian Kahuna Sherman Dudoit, and is part of the traditional old style lomilomi.

Although there are as many different lomilomi styles as there are lomi practitioners, there is an absolute common thread that runs throughout, and that is that the giver (massage practitioner) begins with p**e (prayer) offering their service from a place of unconditional love, care and compassion - ALOHA. In Hawaii ‘alo’ is the presence of divine/love and ‘ha’ is breath, or spirit. So it is, that a lomilomi treatment occurs through the breath of the divine which is maintained by the giver throughout.

Traditional lomilomi was practiced in Hawaii within family groups and passed on from one generation to the next. As an ancient Polynesian healing art, it was brought to the shores of Hawaii by Polynesian ocean navigators, perhaps around 400 A.D. When Europeans invaded in the late 1700s many customs and practices, including lomilomi, went underground and were practiced in secret to protect their longevity, sacredness and to ensure the passing on to future generations.
