Today is Grief Awareness Day…

It’s taken me a while to gather my thoughts around this today as grief is so much more than a word, a post or a feeling…

It’s a living being, it’s us!!

Yes, grief is a 5 letter word but it has a million words & emotions attached…

I feel it is one of the biggest words we actually have and use but on many occasions it silences us.

I found I have a lot to share but I’m actually going to just pose you a few questions:

What does grief look like for you?

How does grief affect your life?

How can we support those grieving better?

What has been the one thing that has really helped you while on your grief journey?

I feel allowing us the time to reflect, giving a space to speak & share our stories, we can better educate each other…

We may be lost for words in our own grief or we may struggle to find the words when we know someone else is grieving, but we can hopefully remember this post and the comments and move through grief a little easier together… however that looks…

I can’t change the world but I can try and educate & encourage my little community so we don’t become one of the 6million Aussies the article refers to.

Commit to making the phone call or logging on to your super fund this week “just to check” you have an upto date “binding nomination” form in place 🙂

Then, either share this or have conversation those around you to make sure they do to…

Remember education & knowledge when shared is the most powerful tool we have 🙂

Keep rippling positive change into the world people 🩷🩷

At least 6.5 million Australians will have no say in who inherits their superannuation, according to new research from Super Consumers Australia. It is urging people to make sure they have a legally "binding" nomination to ensure their super goes to the people they want it to.

Something we were talking about last week :)

Yes the left one has finer cremains in there also, they will have just gone to the bottom but I think this hives a good visual of the difference :)

What remains when you're nothing but CREMAINS?
A Side by Side Look: Flame vs. Water Cremation 💧🔥
What you’re seeing is the physical difference between the two most common cremation methods today.

🔥 Left: Flame cremation- labeled as cremation:
Remains are light gray, often with visible bone shards, even after going through a cremulator (a machine designed to break them down further). The pH of these remains is highly alkaline, not acidic, and if not mixed with a good amount of soil, can harm plant roots and grass.

💧Right: Water cremation- labeled by brand name, aquamation:
After the water part of alkaline hydrolysis is completes, only soft, powdery bone remains once dry. On a scientific level, it isn't even bone anymore, it is now calcium phosphate. 💀

So often I go on “tour” on my own & come back & share/detail my findings with you all…

This time though, Jen & I are taking you with us he he he

One question that comes up often is “what happens when we or (family member) gets picked up? Where do they go?

Often I can answer this but there are times I can’t as it’s a facility I may not have been to or it’s a service that doesn’t have their own facility.

I feel this event is such a special one, as it helps on so many levels.

One thing I have learnt from families is fear can be a big cause of death anxiety and anxiety around the unknown…

This is your chance to come and have a little look, ask as many questions as you want, learn a little bit more and see for yourself how loved/cared for your loved one or you are right until the very end.

This is for you and we (Two Jens who are Doulas and Carly who is the owner and funeral director) will be there with you every step of the way.

Let’s get curious together and hopefully I will see you on the 14th.

Smiles, Jen x

I'm heartened by the thoughtful discussions we had at today's Death Cafe 🙂

Thank you to all who came along and helped create a safe and supportive environment.

Today what came through was fear, and together we delved into the fears that often accompany discussions about death and dying.

We recognised that these emotions are valid and shared by many.

Through our open and honest conversations we develop greater awareness, empathy, and understanding.

Creating a more death aware community and breaking down the taboo around death & dying are what the Death Cafes are all about 🙂

I hope you left feeling more confident and less fearful and know that you are part of a community that truly cares.

Thank you again for sharing your time with me.

Smiles, Jen x

So last week I had a wonderful lady & her family come & ask me about aquamation (water cremation) and if I had any information on it and what I knew…

I said I knew a little but I would info gather for them and put a little pack together for them to have enough information and contacts to make an informed neutral decision…

Well, did I enjoy a wonderful afternoon going down the rabbit holes of this topic…

What I found out:

We have 2 (yes 2!!!) aquamation facilities (more for pets but 2 for humans) in Australia.

One is in Tassie and the other just over the border in NSW.

Tassie is a new facility and is ran by an amazing team and the other one is ran by John and has been established for 15yrs, yes 15 years and I had never heard of it!!!

After extensive conversations with both and also the transport companies they both use I am happy to say that they are both fabulous.

Both will have different appeals to different people but both ran by amazing humans, offering amazing service and I am going to pop to the NSW facility in November.

If you would like to know more about this or if this interests you, it is a choice and a very real/comparable choice.

For both options, your person has to be collected from a funeral home/hospital/hospice, they are unable to collect from home. This adds approx $550/$600 onto the below pricing 🙂

NSW (if looking at price, this includes transport of your loved one and also offers a prepay option):
https://environmentallyfriendlycremations.com.au

Tassie (transport from Vic is around $2880 and no prepay option) :
https://alluviumwatercremations.com.au

I hope you find this information useful, plants a seed if this is an option you have been wondering about or if your sat scratching your head going “what on earth is Jen talking about”, enjoy the learnings and ask away.

Sending smiles, Jen x
