I find reading The Hospice Heart posts provides wonderful guidance and makes me pause to think how my interactions with others can be improved. Thank you Gabby.

When someone is declining from age or illness, their autonomy, their voice, and their choices are often taken from them.

Everyone is telling them what to do, when to do it, and how to feel about everything that is happening to them.

One of the things that I remind families, caregivers, and end-of-life care workers is to meet them where they are, not where we think they should be. Their experience is not about us, and we should not be telling them what to do or how to feel about it.

I think our role should be to listen to what they need and want, and let them know that not only do they have a voice, but we hear it, we are listening to it, we will validate it, and we will honor it.

And when that day comes that the volume on their voice has been turned down, we can advocate for them and speak on their behalf. They deserve that, all human beings deserve that.

Choosing Photos for a Funeral:
Insights from "The Lady of Death"

I often get asked about how to choose photos for a funeral service. It's a deeply personal task, whether you're selecting images for yourself in advance or for a beloved family member. I recently listened to an incredibly helpful episode of "The Lady of Death" podcast, hosted by Robyn O'Connell (aka "The Lady of Death" herself), that I believe will resonate with many of you.

Robyn is doing fantastic work uncovering the myths and complexities surrounding funerals and the industry itself. In one of my favourite episodes, she interviewed Jason Khune from Still Moments (http://www.stillmoments.net.au). Their conversation offered wonderful guidance on how to select those special images that truly tell a unique story.

I highly recommend giving this episode a listen if you're looking for support and ideas on choosing meaningful photographs to honour a life.
