NDIS UPDATE β What was announced on 22 April 2026
Yesterday, NDIS Minister Mark Butler announced significant changes to the NDIS at the National Press Club.
We know this news has caused a lot of worry and uncertainty in our community, so we wanted to share a clear summary of what was announced.
What's been announced:
πΉ Tightened eligibility β An estimated 160,000 participants will no longer meet the criteria for the NDIS over the next four years.
πΉ Reduced plan funding β Average annual plan funding will be reduced from around $31,000 to $26,000, returning to 2023 levels.
πΉ Renewed eligibility assessments β All participants will undergo reassessments under new criteria.
πΉ New Framework Planning delayed β The planning reforms previously set for July 2026 have been pushed back to April 2027.
πΉ Reduced community participation funding β Cuts to social and community participation supports will start from 1 July 2026.
What this means right now:
βοΈ Most changes don't take effect immediately. New eligibility criteria will be developed by a technical advisory group and won't apply until at least 2028.
βοΈ Your current plan is still valid. No changes will be made to your plan without contact from the NDIA.
βοΈ New legislation still needs to pass Parliament before many of these changes can be implemented.
βοΈ Consultation is planned with the disability community as criteria are developed.
We understand this is hard news.
If you're feeling overwhelmed, worried, or confused β you're not alone.
