🌟 Success at Wagtail Psychology’s Mental Health First Aid Course! 🌟

We’re thrilled to share that our recent two-day Standard Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course was a resounding success! Facilitated by the knowledgeable and engaging Jose Alonso, the training equipped participants with essential skills to recognize and respond to mental health challenges in adults.

Over 12 hours of face-to-face instruction, attendees delved into identifying signs of common mental health issues, applying evidence-based action plans, and providing initial support during crises. This comprehensive approach ensures that our community is better prepared to offer timely and effective assistance.

Upon completion, participants received accreditation as Mental Health First Aiders, along with a certificate and manual to support their ongoing learning journey.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to the positive, supportive atmosphere throughout the course. Your commitment to mental health awareness and support is truly inspiring.

Date: 3rd - 4th May 2025
Cost: $330 includes course materials, refreshments and lunch, accreditation as a mental health first aider, certificate on completion.

The standard Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course teaches participants how to provide initial support to another adult who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis, until professional help is received, or the crisis resolves. Course participants learn about the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems in adults, how to recognise and respond to an emerging or worsening mental health problem and the treatments and support available.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
- recognise the signs and symptoms of mental health problems in adults
- use an evidence-based action plan to initiate a mental health first aid conversation
- assess for a range of crises situations and provide initial support
- apply self-care practices as a mental health first aider
- understand the prevalence and impact of mental illnesses, risk factors and treatments and supports available

FACE-TO-FACE TRAINING
The 12-hour course will be delivered over 2 days.
All sessions are led by an MHFA trained and licensed instructor.

Are you a dedicated clinical/endorsed psychologist or general psychologist looking to make a difference? Wagtail Psychology is seeking a skilled psychologist to join our team on a part-time basis, 2 to 3 days a week to work with adults.

Wagtail Psychology is a small boutique private practice based in Silkstone with a focus on adult wellbeing, community engagement and mental health education. This is a wonderful opportunity to work in a supportive environment where you can bring innovative ideas and expertise to a meaningful role in mental health care.

We are looking for an individual who has the ability and experience to work autonomously and who is interested in treating adults. Wagtail Psychology is a new practice and will remain small with a broader focus on upskilling the community in mental health education.There will be further opportunities as the practice develops to provide group programs and to facilitate learning experiences.

I am pleased to announce we now have a Mental Health First Aid Facilitator on board to deliver much needed training to business and community organisations!

Welcome Jose Alonso.

Jose brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his role as a Mental Health First Aid Facilitator, drawing on a diverse background in education and law enforcement. With a career spanning over 30 years, Jose has made significant contributions in both fields. He is passionate and committed to up-skilling others and providing much needed education on managing mental health concerns within the workplace.

Beginning as Secondary School teacher, Jose taught in several remote schools in outback Queensland, where he not only educated students but also provided support to address behavioural and mental health challenges. In 1994, Jose transitioned to the Queensland Police Service, where he has since dedicated himself to a multifaceted career. In this 30 years of service, Jose has held various roles, including service as a facilitator at the Queensland Police Academy. There, he delivered important modules on law, social issues, mental health, and su***de prevention. Additionally, Jose has worked in several forensic fields within the police service, gaining invaluable experience in addressing complex issues related to mental health.

Jose holds a Bachelor of Science and a Diploma of Teaching, and is currently pursuing a Master of Suicidology, expected to be completed by the end of 2025. He is an accredited Mental Health First Aid Facilitator with Mental Health First Aid Australia, a global, purpose-driven provider of mental health first aid education that equips individuals with the knowledge and skills to provide support when it matters most.

With over 10 years experience in the field of psychology, I am a passionate and dedicated Clinical Psychologist who works with diverse clients to improve their mental health and well-being. I provide evidence-based interventions and assessments for adults with complex mental health needs. I have a Master of Psychology (Clinical) from the University of Southern Queensland, and I have developed strong skills in counselling, assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and evaluation, as well as in leadership, communication, collaboration, and advocacy. I have worked in both the public and private sectors and also have a solid background in positive behaviour support. I am also an approved Behaviour Support Practitioner. I am committed to delivering high-quality and ethical services to my clients, and to advancing the profession of psychology through research, education, and community engagement. My goal is to use my expertise and experience to help people overcome their challenges, achieve their potential, and live fulfilling lives.
