Did your child crawl?
It is one of the first things I ask families. And it turns out, Dr Mira is pretty interested in this one too!
Not because skipping crawling automatically means something is wrong. But because cross-pattern crawling on hands and knees is one of the most neurologically rich movements a child can do. It integrates the ATNR, builds bilateral coordination, and lays down the foundational wiring for reading, writing and sustained attention.
From a chiropractic perspective, crawling also does something else entirely. It loads the spine and pelvis in a way that supports healthy neurological development, promotes optimal joint mechanics from early in life, and stimulates the proprioceptive pathways that feed directly into how the brain organises itself. Dr Mira sees the physical echoes of missed crawling in her patients regularly. Tight hips, poor core stability, asymmetrical movement patterns. The body keeps the record.
Children who bum-shuffled, commando crawled, or went straight to walking may have missed some of that foundational wiring. The good news is the nervous system is plastic. It is never too late to go back and fill those gaps in, both neurologically and structurally.
This is exactly what we do together at House of Wellness.
