The story of George Hackenschmidt, also known as "The Russian Lion," is often associated with the invention of the bench press exercise. However, the history of the bench press as an exercise is a bit more complex.

George Hackenschmidt was a Russian wrestler and strongman who became famous in the early 1900s for his incredible feats of strength. He was known for performing various exercises that would later be incorporated into modern weightlifting, including the squat and the deadlift.

It's said that Hackenschmidt was the first to use a bench to perform an exercise similar to the modern-day bench press, which he called the "floor press." The floor press involved lying on the ground and pressing a weight up with both arms.

However, it wasn't until the 1930s and 1940s that the bench press as we know it today became a popular exercise. This was largely due to the efforts of weightlifting pioneer Bob Hoffman and his magazine, Strength and Health.

Hoffman popularized the bench press by featuring it in his magazine and promoting it as an exercise that could help athletes build upper body strength and power. From there, the bench press became a staple of weightlifting and powerlifting competitions, and it's now one of the most popular exercises in the gym.

So while George Hackenschmidt may have played a role in the development of the bench press, it was ultimately the efforts of Bob Hoffman and others that made it the popular exercise it is today.
