Many mums are surprised when foods they’ve tolerated for years suddenly cause bloating, discomfort or fatigue but this shift is actually very common.
As part of our ongoing MumSafe™ education with women’s health experts like naturopath and nutritionist Emma Sutherland, we learn how different stages of motherhood can place extra load on the gut.
Here are a few reasons why food reactions may change:
✨ Hormonal shifts
Postpartum, breastfeeding and perimenopause all influence the gut. Lower estrogen levels can slow digestion and increase sensitivity.
✨ Changes in the gut lining
Pregnancy, birth and inflammation may make the gut barrier more reactive, meaning certain foods feel “too much” even if they were fine before.
✨ Broken sleep
When sleep is disrupted, digestion becomes less efficient and the gut–brain connection becomes more stressed.
✨ The mental load
Constant multitasking and emotional pressure activate the stress response, which diverts blood flow away from digestion.
✨ Antibiotics or illness
These can alter the balance of gut bacteria, temporarily changing how foods are processed.
The important thing to remember is this:
A new means your gut is under load and asking for support.
At FIT FOR 2, we take a whole-body approach to movement and help mums understand how stress, hormones and digestion interact.
