We were privileged to hear from Dale from GreenGrass Lawns & Landscapes at our Toowoomba Business Partners breakfast, and the feedback afterwards was outstanding.
Dale spoke about something every business owner wrestles with, but few articulate this clearly. Team culture. ‘It’s not complicated. Difficult, yes. But not complicated.’
He centred his presentation around three powerful pillars: The Why. Authenticity. Purpose.
On The Why, Dale reminded us that every single team member has one. ‘You might not like it. You might disagree with it. But they do have a why.’ If we don’t understand where our people are coming from, we can’t have productive conversations. We can’t lead well. We can’t build trust.
On Authenticity, he was direct. ‘Your words don’t mean crap.’ If you ask for feedback, you must genuinely welcome it. If you say you care, your actions have to prove it. Teams forgive mistakes. They don’t forgive inauthentic leadership.
And on Purpose, Dale delivered one of the most grounding truths of the morning. ‘For 99% of your staff, their mission is not to go homeless. To feed their kids. Your business mission doesn’t mean much compared to that.’
He shared that the true purpose of GreenGrass Lawns and Landscapes is to provide opportunity for his family and his staff. Everything else flows from that. When staff feel genuinely supported, customers feel genuinely cared for. Profit becomes the byproduct, not the driver.
He also shared his hiring philosophy: personality and attitude first. Skills can be taught. Culture cannot. One of the most powerful reflection questions he left us with was simple: ‘How do I feel on Sunday night about going to work Monday morning?’
Dale is a respected, kind and authentic leader who leads from lived experience, not theory. His honesty, humility and strength creates conversations to support the business owners in our team.
Thank you, Dale, for sharing so openly.
A big thank you as well to our wonderful visitors:
