Yes, anxiety is a normal response to a perceived fear or danger. In fact, it is helpful for quickly and appropriately responding to real danger 🏃🏽♂️
Where anxiety may not be helpful is when it is frequent and/or overwhelming, and when it impacts our ability to life our lives the way we want to.
Often, this occurs from experiences and traumas in the past that cause the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) to be overstimulated in the present 🧠
Ultimately, our body is trying to protect us and keep us safe from danger 🫶🏼 Which is a beautiful thing, though not always helpful or necessary, especially when there is no real danger.
⭐️ So, how can we work on this?
Identifying what triggers your anxiety is a good step, and working with professionals to unpack and understand the relationship between your past experiences and traumas, and how they manifest now in your thoughts, feelings and actions.
Also, finding practical ways to activate your parasympathetic nervous system (PSNS or ‘rest and digest’) that work for you. The more regularly you activate your PSNS, the less anxious you should feel on a daily basis 😌
Ways I activate my PSNS:
- breath work
- meditation
- listening to calming music
- walking or sitting with no stimulation
- nature or beach walks
- warm baths
