Thinking about cosmetic surgery? Here's what you need to know before your consultation with Dr Drew Cronin FRACS.

Since July 2023, AHPRA introduced national guidelines to strengthen patient safety across the cosmetic surgery industry. At The Coastal Clinic, we fully comply with — and support — these important reforms.

What this means for you:

✅ A referral from your GP or specialist is required before your consultation
✅ A Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) screening with one of our nurses is part of your assessment
✅ A mandatory 7-day cooling-off period applies before booking your procedure

These steps exist to protect you and ensure every decision is made with care, clarity, and confidence.

To book a consultation with Dr Cronin, you will require a referral from your GP.

Do breast implants need to be replaced every 10 years?

Dr Drew Cronin explains that this is one of the most common misconceptions discussed in consultation.

There is no strict “expiry date” for breast implants. The idea that they must be replaced every 10 years is a myth.

Instead, implant replacement is considered only when there is a clinical indication or change, such as:

Concerns with implant integrity (e.g. rupture)
Development of capsular contracture
Noticeable changes in breast shape or position over time
Personal preference or lifestyle changes

Many patients can have implants that remain suitable for significantly longer than 10 years, provided they are monitored appropriately and not causing any concerns.

Regular follow-up and imaging (when recommended) are important to assess implant condition and overall breast health.

Every patient’s situation is different, and decisions regarding implant replacement should always be made in consultation with a qualified Specialist Plastic Surgeon.

This patient in her 60s presented to Dr Cronin with concerns regarding her lower face and neck following significant weight loss. Dr Cronin performed a face and neck lift (rhytidectomy).

The surgical incision was positioned in front of the ear into the temporal hair, with an additional incision placed in the submental crease beneath the chin.

At The Coastal Clinic, all surgical patients have a thorough pre-operative consultation with our dermal and laser therapist. As part of their pre-surgical skin preparation, patients may undergo a combination of treatments including Laser Genesis, bio-remodelling injections, and a personalised skincare protocol using Synergie Skincare products. These treatments are used to support skin health and hydration in the lead-up to surgery.

Photos are taken at 6 weeks post-procedure. Individual results vary.

A commonly asked question from patients planning an abdominoplasty or circumferential (belt) lipectomy is: “When are the drains removed?”

In this video, Dr Drew Cronin explains why drain removal is guided by healing and output, rather than a fixed timeframe. Keeping drains in place until they are ready to come out plays an important role in reducing fluid collection and supporting a smoother recovery.

Individual recovery varies, and drain management is always carefully assessed as part of post-operative care.

Circumferential Lipectomy with Augmentation Mastopexy

This patient underwent a circumferential lipectomy and breast augmentation using round 380cc implants with a breast lift (mastopexy) after massive weight loss following bariatric surgery.

This procedure took around 6 hours, and the patient was an inpatient in hospital for 5 nights post-operatively.

The scar position for the circumferential lipectomy was designed to be disguised behind the patient’s string bikini line as shown in the after photo.
